Service is about connecting in a meaningful way, which therefore gives life purpose.
Self-interest or obligation is of little value to anyone else; there’s no love involved, and trite as it may appear to some, that’s all we really need. As Martin Luther King said, “Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
That way we discover our essence, our truth, our love. As Mother Teresa said, at the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.”
