Let Go of Anger and Frustration

Where there is anger, there is usually pain underneath. Anger is a self-gratifying emotion we adopt so as to avoid uncomfortable feelings like losing control, confusion, fear and sadness.
“It's better to cry than be angry, because anger hurts others while tears flow silently through the soul and cleanse the heart.” ~ Pope John Paul
The more anger you hold in your heart toward the past, the less capable you are of happiness in the present. As Jennifer Edwards put it, "The beauty of life is that while we cannot undo what is done, we can see it, understand it, learn from it and change. So that every new moment is spent not in regret, guilt, frustration or anger, but in wisdom, understanding and love."

Sometimes you don't realize the weight of something you've been carrying until you feel the weight of its release. Anger is like that.
Workshop A5 ~ Let Go of Anger and Frustration

Anger and frustration are caused by an insistence that the world should conform to your wishes. Acting in an angry way is self-defeating because it does not lead to one's needs being met. It only generates opposition. However, the egotistical need to be right, or to be in control, causes one to interpret the anger as being justified.
The emotion of anger should not be suppressed; if that is attempted, it only leads to lingering antagonism that returns again later to bite, or else if held over a longer term it can lead to depression. But it should not be acted out in a stimulus-response manner either - that is an animal level of consciousness. The art of going beyond anger and frustration lies in learning to accept what is, to let go of the need to be right all the time, and to flow with the natural unfolding of life. We can develop a mindful perspective, which reveals that life is precisely as it needs to be at every moment.

Typically, anger is stirred up by frustration; you’re not getting what you want or deserve. Frustration may stem from healthy, legitimate needs, or from depression, which may be anger turned inward, now being expressed outwardly. Or, from narcissistic, false entitlement needs. Now what about you? Are you blaming others for your anger rather than searching for solutions? Is your anger more frequent or intense than you would like it to be?
