Listening to Your Heart
Commentary by Peter Shepherd

“To know how to choose a path with heart is to learn how to follow intuitive feeling. Logic can tell you superficially where a path might lead to, but it cannot judge whether your heart will be in it.” ~ Jean Shinoda Bolen
What exactly is meant by the term ‘heart’? It’s not just the physical organ, through which we feel emotions as the heart pounds faster or relaxes. The heart also corresponds to the heart chakra of subtle energies and information, and it has a built-in nervous system of its own linked to emotions and intuition. It also aligns with the right-brain way of thinking holistically and non-verbally, whereas the ego mind is more left-brain and verbal - in the head. So when we talk about “listening to our heart,” it means being mindful of our soul’s perspective, our inner knowing, our intuitive feeling, our essential loving core.
“When you have compassion and surrender to your own heart, you are surrendering to the hidden power in your heart, God. You are surrendering to love, because God is Love, the cohesive force of the universe that connects us all. Surrender is not just a religious concept; it's a power tool for listening to the voice of your spirit and following its directions. When you surrender your head to your heart, you allow your heart to give you a wider, higher intelligence perspective. Remember the phrase, 'The real teacher is within you.' Very simply, that teacher is to be found in the common sense of your own heart.” ~ Sara Paddison

“Use your heart. Understand. Learn to see things in the now, not as they were or will be, or as they might or should be, but as they are, right now, in this moment. The heart sees the now; the mind only sees the next. If you can't learn to see the now, you'll never see what's truly there, and then where will you be?” ~ E.J. Patten, Return to Exile
“Surrender is faith that the power of love can accomplish anything... even when you can not foresee the outcome.” ~ Deepak Chopra

“Everyone wants to belong, or be a part of something bigger than themselves, but it's important to follow your heart and be true to yourself in the process.” ~ Emily Giffin
“I have come to a deeper, more soulful beauty and clarity like an oasis in the desert. From that place of clarity, a vision of what I could have, what I could do, who I could be has emerged ... if I allow my heart to become a place of compassion, acceptance and forgiveness.” ~ Sharon E. Rainey
“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” ~ Steve Jobs
