We need to feel that we deserve consideration, that we are worth listening to, before we will listen to our inner truth and express our feelings and ideas to others. Shame is feeling that "I am not OK," whilst guilt is "What I did is not OK." To realize that one is indeed "OK" is the key step that makes personal growth possible.

We need our past experience for the learning it offers; we don't need it to cling on to regrets or blame, that changes nothing. We need our future to make plans; we don't need it to worry about what might happen, that changes nothing. Like an artist creating a painting, we put our life together in the present moment.
