For sure, both luck and hard work play a role in achievement but most important is having a vision that inspires and energizes you. Lack of confidence and mulling on past failures then fall away. Having worked out the steps to get there, and equipping yourself with the necessary know-how, by being persistent and determined you will arrive. It’s the game of life!
If you persist long enough, and learn from your mistakes along the way, you will win.
As Dan Rather said, "Courage is being afraid but going on anyhow." Don't be discouraged. It's often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock. And Confucius said, "It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop."
When you're down, go inside and really see and feel what it's like to achieve your dream, like it's happening now. This vision will give you fresh inspiration - with belief and action your dream will manifest.
