Tracking is the amount of space between all the letters.  It is contrasted with kerning which is the space between a particular two letters. If the tracking of an amount of type is changed, the block of text looks darker or lighter. Sometimes tracking is reduced so we can get more text in an area, for example on a button. We maintain the structure and shape of the type, but make the letters closer!

The text on the right has had tracking applied so that it takes up less space. It does, however, look darker than the text on the left.
