Love Without Limits!
By Wallace Huey
How do I get through one night without you?
If I had to live without you,
What kinda life would that be?
Oh I need you in my arms, need you to hold.
You are my world, my heart, my soul.
If you ever leave,
Baby you would take away
Everything good in my life.
And tell me now...
How do I live without you?
I want to know...
How do I breathe without you?
If you ever go...
How do I ever, ever survive?
How do I, how do I, oh how do I live?
There would be no sun in my sky,
There would be no love in my life,
There'd be no world left for me.
Written above are part of the lyrics for the famous LeAnn Rimes pop song “How Do I Live.” This song is about a dependency relationship between a woman and a man - a dependency that is common, even lauded in romantic human relationships.
However this dependency, as any counsellor will explain, is full of heartbreak, sadness and grief. This is because another person cannot fulfill all our needs in the way communicated in the lyrics above. If we seek to have our needs for belonging and relationship met so completely by another we are bound to be disappointed and experience disillusionment. We need to connect with a higher love.
So what can be done?
If we gradually over time transfer our dependency on our romantic partner to a dependency on the Divine, then our needs can and will be met through this Divine relationship. I invite you to reread the above lyrics and as you do so let them speak to you of a Divine Romance, not a falling in love, but a rising in love to merge with the Divine.
Unlike the dependency we might develop for a person, a dependency on the Divine is completely reliable. Indeed the only obsession that actually creates more abundance and health is an obsession with the Divine, because through it we are rising in, and offering, a universal love. Such a love knows no boundaries, and seeks no reward save the opportunity to give and to serve. Such a love will bring your romantic relationship into right relationship while having an abundance to share with the world at large.
This love, the love of the Whole, the love of the Heart, will release in you an energy and passion without limit. This is the love that Mother Teresa had for the world’s abandoned. This is the love that had Gandhi stand up for the rights of the peasants of India. And this is the love that empowered Nelson Mandela to emerge triumphant from his years of captivity and solitary confinement speaking of healing and forgiveness.
This is the love of God embodied in everyone, but only expressed by a few.
I invite you to reach down deep into your own heart, to find this love and to offer it in service to humanity. Then these lyrics and the lyrics of many pop songs, will communicate something infinitely deeper and more profound, because you will know what it means to love without limits.
