Can I Become Enlightened?

Michelangelo

By Wallace Huey

In the Sistine Chapel ceiling, in the Vatican in Rome - painted by Michelangelo in the 16th Century - there is one section that shows a remarkable association: the relationship between God and Adam, the very first human being according to the Old Testament.

Now of course Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling is world famous as a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art, but the special significance of this part of the ceiling is not at all well known.

Here Michelangelo is communicating the state of enlightenment.

If we examine this painting closely we see that God and Adam are completely entranced with each other. Each is looking directly into the other's eyes. Notice too that Adam is naked, open and vulnerable.

And their arms are outstretched. The index finger of each hand almost touches, but not quite.

Here Michelangelo is representing the qualities of the enlightened state. Man (Adam) on the hillside (the material world) is in direct communication with God in the sky (the spiritual world). The two are conjoined. God is rushing in to be with Adam and they are in deep communion. Adam only has to stretch out his hand to seek assistance and God comes rushing in to communicate. But they never actually physically touch. There is always a gap.

This gap represents Man's place in the material world, where he can be both separate from and yet, paradoxically, in deep communion with the spiritual realm. God is Adam's superconscious, which Adam can connect with at will while profoundly relaxed, open and defenceless, and when in this utterly relaxed state the superconscious is immediately on hand to offer spiritual wisdom, insight and understanding. This superconscious state is enlightenment.

So why did Michelangelo choose Adam? He chose Adam because we are all his descendants, so we are all imbued with this power. The power to commune with the Divine.

Anyone sensitive to art who has borne witness to Michelangelo's paintings and sculptures, can only marvel at how paint and stone have been imbued with such spiritual life force. The man was a genius and I believe an enlightened Spiritual Master.

When Michelangelo painted Adam in the Sistine Chapel he was painting himself. And it's because of his direct relationship with the Divine, that he was able to bring immense spiritual power into his art.

However, as Michelangelo has inferred, we all have this power to be in communion with the Divine. We do not have to paint a work of art to express our creativity. For the world has a myriad of possibilities for creative expression.

Our starting point is to know, without a shadow of doubt, why we were born. What is the purpose of our existence? This is the hero's journey. To discover our true purpose in life and then, through communion with our superconscious, to live out that purpose with ever increasing self expression, freedom and love.

Remember, we are all humans like Adam, so we are all soft-wired for enlightenment. It is not for the few, it is for everyone.
