Want to renew your life?
We believe that everyone, given the tools, can live a brilliant life!
A man was feeling depressed and went to see an analyst who claimed he could analyze and understand everyone. The analyst asked the man a number of questions.
After an hour the analyst gave his prognosis. You are depressed because you have not found your life’s purpose. "What is my life’s purpose?” the man asked. "I don’t know,” replied the analyst. “Why not - that’s what I am paying you for?” asserted the man. "I only know my own purpose," replied the analyst. "And what is your purpose?" asked the man. “That’ll be $300,” replied the analyst!
You see we are fundamentally alone. We come into the world alone. We leave the world alone. Between these two bookends we live our life. All of us want to be understood and to be known. We can spend years searching for that elusive friend, lover or teacher who understands us fully. But does anyone really know us? Can anyone completely understand us? Or is it our job to know ourselves?
Fortunately we have one friend who follows us and who is related to us our whole life. However this friend has to be invited into our life as a silent guest. It is this friend, and only this friend, who can know us completely.
Who is this friend? It is our silent inner observer.
How can we invite him into our life? By learning to watch our own mind working - as if it belonged to someone else.
As we practice this inner discipline of silent observation, gradually our mind, who we thought we were, becomes the stranger (because we discover how strange it is), and our silent observer becomes ourself!
Eventually if we persist in such observation, the mind gradually loses its power to govern our behavior, and we becomes entirely dependent on an alternative source for our inner direction. At first this source speaks in a trickle, then in a stream and eventually in a huge river of inner inspiration. This great river carries us to the ocean of bliss and unshakable inner peace.
It is then that you know that you cannot be known, for you are infinite and limitless, whereas someone can only be understood if they are finite and limited.
That is how a Spiritual Teacher can know one of his students, but they cannot ever know the teacher. For the student is finite and limited, operating as they do from the realm of the mind, whereas the teacher is boundless.
So which is the most beneficial approach, to seek friends who can never know you, or to observe yourself?
In this regard a Spiritual Teacher can be most helpful.
