“Last Thursday evening, my door bell rang, and I was happy to receive the Core Sports Performance set of CD's by Dr. Jack Singer, Ph.D. I was excited to be chosen to review these CD's, and after listening to them, and going through the Hypnosis sampler which was included in the package, I can highly recommend these CD's to t-nation readers. Once again, I highly recommend these CD's. From his introduction about himself, to what exactly hypnosis is, he explains in a very pleasant voice, and in an easy to understand manner what he expects you to learn, and how and why to apply the information he imparts. Some of the significant points in the intro were; hypnosis is an experience of altered systems. It helps us relax, be calm, and focus on what is important. Already I have benefited from the CD's by placing myself in a trance at bedtime to help me recover from the idiocy that is so prevalent in the public school system. It has been mentioned before that stress is the mind over-riding the impulse of the body to kick the living shit out of someone who desperately needs it. I have used the relaxation techniques during the day and the trance at night, coupled with weight training to relieve the stress, although I will reserve the right to someday kick the shit out of some administrators who need it. I digress.

I learned that I am in control of what I get out of my trances. I learned not to use negative language when talking to myself. The subconscious mind does not hear negatives. I need to work on using correct self-talk. Most important, it was reiterated to me that any habit can be changed in 21 days if we are conscientious and consistent in working on changing it. Right now I am in the process of consistently listening to one of the three tracks each night at bedtime. I have done so for the past four evenings. I like how it helps me calm down, and I like giving myself some good self-talk. I will let T-Nation know how the next 17 days go.

I plan on using these CD's on all of my sons. They are all competitive athletes who train very hard. One is a division-one basketball player, and the rest are all working hard to attain that level in the sports they love. I really believe that this, along with correct training, technique work, and nutrition will help them all attain this goal. “Introduction to Core Sports Performance: In this segment Dr. Singer first establishes his credentials as a psychologist, then provides an overview and explanation of hypnosis and altered states of consciousness. There is also a brief explanation of the mind body connection, extinction of habits, and replacement of negative habits with positive ones. This is a good chapter for people who may have some misgivings or misconceptions about the validity of hypnosis. I had already investigated some of the theories and techniques of performing in an altered state of consciousness, and was receptive to the techniques, but it is nice to know that the material was prepared and presented by a legitimate professional.

Breathing and Visualization: This was a very informative and useful segment. I was familiar with diaphragmatic breathing for bracing during squat and dead lift, but not as a relaxation technique. Practicing this has been of great benefit in both my exercises and at work. It is a great way to calm down, get focused, and take control of my body during a hard lift and during stressful situations that occur during the day. This is a surprisingly simple and effective technique. Following this with the flexing/relaxing sequence, I am left with a very calm and relaxed feeling. After a few sessions of this, it has become very easy and convenient to achieve a very relaxed state. An interesting observation of my self is that I never realized how tense I can be until I experienced complete relaxation, and was able to make a comparison.

The visualization of a previous experience was very effective to help me develop a more positive association with successfully accomplishing a goal and having a positive association with the actual execution of a given lift. Prior to this I never had a whole lot of enthusiasm toward squats and deads, but presently, I look forward to them, and there have already been marked improvement in both lifts. My dietary habits have changed a bit for the better, and I have gained 6 lbs. as of this week. Obviously there was a lot of room for improvement in my case, but for some reason I was not acknowledging or doing anything about it until now. This effect is kind of spooky, but thus far, very effective.

Trained Optimism: In this session Dr. Jack takes us down deep into another trance state with a warm, relaxing emphasis on controlling the level of trance using a combination of the previously practiced techniques. While in this state, it is suggested to develop a positive self talk as it relates to your athletic performance. This has helped me to overcome my inner critic. Some of you may have one of these. It's the one that sabotages your confidence and can cause resilience to whither in the face of a challenge. I would say that regardless of sport, if you have a poor self dialogue or inner critic that reprimands you for not performing up to par, this segment should be very helpful.

Emotional Balance: This session deals with the conundrum of arousal, relaxation, and stress as it relates to performance and how to achieve the optimal level. Building on the previous sessions he takes us on another journey into the subconscious. This time the goal is to gain some control over the emotional factors that affect performance. Two serious problems that used to plague my performance as a wrestler and in lifting are over psyching, and conversely shutting down. In the over-psyched state, performance would suffer due to a lack of control over my reactions to an opponent. A typical scenario would be to shoot a takedown too quickly, or put too much effort into a move and end up making a serious mistake. In lifting it has led to several episodes of self destruction by going way too hard on a lift that was way too heavy, and either blowing a shoulder, tearing a quad, or most recently, the acute dislocation of a vertebra. Going flat hasn't been such a problem, but with poor self talk, a flat workout has occasionally turned to "screw it, I'm selling those stupid weights." What this session has helped me to rectify is my arousal levels, to prevent an over psyche, and going flat, which is not as painful but can be just as detrimental. Although different people will have different emotional challenges to meet, this session covers an extensive number of factors and enables the athlete to control them.

Over all I have enjoyed this series of sessions and have been able to benefit from them both athletically and professionally. I would recommend this to anyone who may be having trouble breaking a performance plateau. When used as directed they are a very good tool to enhance both the enjoyment and performance in a sport. Of all the times I have re-examined and reworked my lifting and eating programs, I had never once bothered to look at my mindset as a factor of performance. My enthusiasm, confidence, and actual performance have increased, and I speculate that they will continue to improve as I continue to use these sessions. I have also prepped and teased a few of my lifting buddies who are interested in this. They definitely want to give this series a listen. Thank you Dr. Singer and the Hypnosis Network.”
