Weather in Nepal

Nepal goes through four seasons in a year: Spring, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter. Each season goes through the different climatic conditions. Such as winters are cold, while monsoon has heavy rainfall, etc.

While trekking, high regions are colder than the lower regions. Thus what to wear trekking in Nepal depends upon the season you are planning your trek in.

Autumn and Spring Season

These are the peak season of the year when the routes are crowded with trekkers. The weather is warm and sunny during these seasons. This season falls under the months from March to May and September to November.

For these months you have to pack both warm and cool clothes. The days are sunny and bright but the nights get chilly as you climb at high altitude. So, cool clothes like supreme clothing are comfortable for your day trek. While warm clothes will be your companion for the nights and early morning.

Winter Season

Winter season is the off-season time of the year. The months of December, January and February come under this season. While trekking during this time you have to carry many warm clothes. As these months are the coldest months of the year. 

There are high chances of snowfall occurrence in high elevation. Thus the weather is much colder there than lower regions. The temperature tends to drop below the freezing point during this time.

Monsoon Season

Monsoon and Summer come under the same in a country like Nepal.The months from June to August fall under this month. It is hot, bright, and sunny during Summer. You can bring cool clothes for daytime and a few warm clothes for the night.

While Monsoon is the season for heavy rainfall. It is rainy and muddy during this time. You should bring waterproof jackets, raincoats, rain boots, etc for this season. 

During these months the rainfall is continuous in the lower region. While there are low chances of rainfall in high altitudes and rain shadow areas.

Checklist for What to Wear Trekking in Nepal

While going on the trek it is best to wear comfortable and loose clothing. Wearing tight and revealing clothes should be avoided. It is also better to not carry jeans clothing during your trek. 

If you are planning to trek around Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other lower regions. Then you can carry shorts, cotton t-shirts, pants, etc for summer. As for winter, you can carry sweaters, woolen clothing, jackets, etc.

But while trekking in high altitudes it is best to carry sweat-absorbent clothes. Clothing that dries fast and keeps your body moisture locked.

  • Thermal Set
    While trekking in cold temperatures, the thermal clothing set is a must. They are the base layer that keeps your inner body warm in high altitudes. Thermals are sweat absorbent.
  • T-shirts
    You should bring T-shirts that are breathable and light in weight. Avoid bringing cotton t-shirts as it absorbs the moisture from your skin. You can bring clothes having Synthetic fabric as it is comfortable for trekking. You can wear them while trekking in the lower region during summer
  • Fleece Jacket
    Fleece Jackets are made of polyester synthetic that provides warmth to one’s body. These jackets are light in weight and can be worn as a second layer while trekking in cold areas.
  • Down Jackets
    While trekking in high altitudes you can carry down jackets with hoods. As it provides warmth in both cold and windy weather. This jacket is light and easily packable.
  • Waterproof Jackets
    The waterproof jacket keeps you dry during the rain period. Sometimes you might encounter rainfall in high altitudes in the evening time.
  • Trekking Pants
    Trekking pants provide great warmth when trekking at low temperatures. This pant keeps your legs warm from the cold. It is better to carry convertible pants that can be taken off during hot weather.
  • Shorts
    Shorts are very useful when trekking in the lower region during summer. As wearing trekking pants can be uncomfortable and sweaty. 
  • Sports Bra
    Carrying a sports bra will be more comfortable while trekking. These are better options than hook bras. This bra is comfortable and easy to wear and take off. Sports bra wicks moisture from your skin.

    While buying undergarments it is better to choose material made of synthetic fabric.

  • Gloves
    Carrying gloves are a must when going in chilly areas as it gets cold in high altitude. So to keep your hands warm you can wear them.
  • Trekking Socks
    It is better to carry thermal socks when trekking in High altitude. They keep your feet warm and prevent blisters.
  • Trekking Boots
    Buy comfortable shoes that don’t bring blisters in your feet. Your boots should have good ankle support and deep rubber soles. Your boots should be able to fit when worn with thick woolen socks. The leather boot should be avoided during the trek.
  • Sandal
    You need to carry slippers for external use. You can’t explore places wearing boots. So you can wear the sandal for this purpose.

You may need to bring extra gear for remote treks like Dolpo trekking, Dhaulagiri circuit, Manaslu tsum valley trek, Kanchenjunga trekking etc. Since you will be camping in some places you may need to bring all the stuff necessary for camping as well.
