3 Reasons Why It’s a Good Idea to Visit Gdańsk

Visit Gdańsk

Gdańsk is a beautiful city, popular among the tourists who come to relax in the Gdańsk Bay or those interested in the history of the region. If you’re planning to visit the north of Poland, you should definitely include Gdańsk. There are at least 3 reasons why it’s worth your while...

Stunning Old Town

Nearly all tours of Gdańsk start in Długi Targ, the most famous square in the city. This is where you can admire the Neptune fountain. Plus, the architecture of this place will surely take your breath away. Towards the end of the square you will find the Green Gate. Once you pass underneath it, you will see the bank of the Motława river. From this place you can admire more gateways, which are the remnants of the fortifications. Crane Gate is the most famous part of these walls.

When you take a tour of the Old Town, do not limit yourself to Długi Targ - explore the adjacent narrow streets as well. You will find many architectural gems and a number of old churches, the most notable of them being St. Mary’s Basilica. As we enter the basilica, we can admire the grandiosity of the Gothic building. These raw walls without ornaments might be a perfect place to find your breath away from the bustle.

Traces of modern history in Gdańsk

Gdańsk is not only a place full of old monuments and buildings. It’s a witness of major events that took place in the last century. This is where World War II started with the assault on Westerplatte. If you’re interested in history, it’s good to plan a trip to this place. It is also in Gdańsk that the collapse of Communism was initiated - you will learn more about it in the Solidarity Museum.

Seaside walk

The Gdańsk Bay, where the city is situated, is a perfect place to chill out after a long day of sightseeing. It’s good to visit the Stogi beach, a place from which you can see the shipyard, and the Brzeźno pier - a good starting point if you want to walk to Sopot or even further on, to Gdynia. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the healthy seaside air and forget about the noise and the crowd, while listening to the waves. You will appreciate a walk like this in the evening or in the early morning, when most people are still sleeping. Then you can have the beach all to yourself and make the most of what nature has to offer. You can also admire nature, especially fauna, in the Oliwa ZOO - another place worth visiting.
