However, it can also be stressful. Not only is travelling so much physically taxing, but it can also drain you emotionally as well. Long layovers, airport and aeroplane food, and jet lag can be very emotionally difficult. A positive mindset is vital in situations like these.

One aspect is all about healthy habits, and changing the way you think about things to a greater or lesser extent. The other category is all about minimizing needless stress.

Take care of yourself

The first thing you need to take into consideration is your health. Namely, all this travelling can be very tiring. You spend a lot of time on trains, buses, cars, planes. It’s even worse if you’re suffering from serious jet lag, or if you have been driving for long hours. The other issue is that people simply let themselves go when they travel. Both of these problems just make each other much worse. Both of these are luckily manageable.

First of all, don’t let your good habits go just because you’re travelling. Find the time to work out, go for a short jog, visit the hotel gym, do some push-ups. Keep yourself as active as you can. An excellent example is just exploring the town you are in on foot. This gives you a chance to see more of the world, as well as forcing you to get some exercise in.

Next, don’t mess up your diet. Just because you’re travelling doesn’t mean you can eat junk. Get a proper meal at the hotel, eat lots of veggies and get some protein in. Fruit and nuts are an excellent substitute for chips and other unhealthy snacks. If you have to eat out, go with healthier options. Instead of a greasy cheeseburger, get yourself a salad, or some grilled chicken. And finally, drink lots of water, at least eight cups a day.

Your taxi cab will be late, traffic will be instance at a time where the roads are usually empty, the plane is going to have longer layovers, your passport will be in your other pair of pants that you never use… Things rarely go according to plan, and sudden changes in your schedule can be very stressful. For this reason we suggest you always have some leeway when organizing your day and your trip. So, prepare all your things a day in advance, pack an extra pair of everything, get to the airport an hour early….

Next, double-check any requirements that might exist for your target destination. This means anything from talking to professional migration agents when visiting a foreign country, down to checking the dress code for the conference you are visiting. The last thing you need is to have your trip not even happening because of a bureaucratic misunderstanding.

Find time for friends and family

A big part of keeping a positive approach when travelling is staying in contact with friends and family. This is especially important if you’re going to be away for several weeks or even months at a time. Talking to the people you care about on a semi-regular basis will boost your mood, it will help you remember why you are doing the things you are doing. It can liven you up in dark moments abroad. It also gives you a sense of home if you’re really far away from your city.

We suggest you set out specific time to do this. Pick an hour or two per day, or in a week, and stick to it. For example, an hour before bed, or right after waking up. Using things like Skype, where you have the video call option, can help you reconnect even more. Of course, sometimes a simple call can be enough. Reading bedtime stories to your kids over the phone can help you maintain contact, and will help you both fall asleep easier.
