Minivan Rental at Tirana Airport for Families and Groups: Practical Guide

Flying into Tirana with kids, grandparents or a bunch of friends? Two taxis plus a mountain of suitcases gets pricey fast. A 7 or 9 seat minivan usually costs less. And you get full freedom on Albanian roads.

We have picked up minivans at Rinas airport several times, and comparing offers online before the trip always saved us money. For minivan rental at Tirana Airport we recommend RosCar. The site compares prices from international and local rental companies, includes full insurance coverage and lets you rent a car without a deposit or a credit card. With a family budget, that last part makes a real difference.

Which Minivan Fits Your Group

Model

Seats

Luggage

Approx. price per day (summer)

Dacia Lodgy / VW Touran

7

2 large bags with all rows up

45 to 65 EUR

Ford Tourneo Custom / Opel Vivaro

9

4 to 5 large bags

80 to 110 EUR

Mercedes Vito

8 to 9

5 large bags

95 to 130 EUR

Honestly, a 7 seater with every seat taken leaves almost no trunk space. Six adults with big suitcases? Take the 9 seater. We learned that one the hard way last August.

Booking Tips From Our Trips

  • Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead for July and August. Minivans sell out first.

  • Request child seats in advance. They usually cost 3 to 5 EUR per day.

  • A regular B license is enough for a 9 seater (8 passengers plus the driver).

  • Add a second driver if you plan to go to Theth or the southern coast. Those are long days.

What to Do at Pickup

  1. Find your meeting point. Many local companies wait outside the arrivals hall with a name sign.

  2. Film the van from all sides, including wheels and the roof edges.

  3. Check the fuel policy. Full to full is the fairest option.

  4. Test the air conditioning. In July it easily hits 35°C in Tirana.

Driving a Minivan in Albania

From the airport to central Tirana it is about 17 km. Without traffic that takes around 25 minutes. Durrës is roughly 40 minutes away by highway.

Main routes to Vlora and Saranda are in good shape. Old towns like Berat and Gjirokastër are another story. Streets are narrow and steep, so we leave the van at the lower parking and walk up. In Tirana itself, parking a long vehicle is tricky. Our advice is simple: choose a hotel with its own parking.

Pick the right size, book early and go for a deal with full cover. After that, the road trip becomes the easiest part of the holiday.

Returning the Van Without Stress

Plan to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your flight. Dropping off a minivan takes longer than a small car, because the staff checks every seat row and the trunk. Fill up the tank at one of the stations on the Tirana to Rinas road. Diesel costs around 1.8 to 1.9 EUR per liter, and a 9 seater burns roughly 8 to 9 liters per 100 km. Also, take a quick look under the seats before you hand over the keys. From our experience, that is where kids' toys, sunglasses and phone chargers love to disappear.
