5 Ways to Feel Safe While on Vacation

By Elliot Caleira

Going on vacation is super exciting and can also be super stressful all at the same time. If you are going to somewhere close to home you may feel like you have everything under control and know what you are doing. If you are going somewhere else, say out of the country, you may be a little more worried about traveling, which is healthy and normal.

Luckily there are several things you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe while you are out exploring the world.

Here are 5 things to do before you leave and while you are on vacation to stay safe:

Be a Smart Traveler

The stereotype of the “typical tourist” exists for a reason. Some people are not the smartest when it comes to traveling. This may be from a lack of research or just not knowing but we want to keep you informed so you don’t get robbed or taken advantage of.

The simple things to do are to try to wear what locals wear. So if you are in Italy, you probably will want to keep your cowboy boots at home. Also keep your passport, ID and money in a spot that is not easily accessible such as your back pocket.

Keep Your Home Safe

Your home may be the last thing you are thinking of when you are away experiencing a new place. But the absolute worst thing that could happen is you coming home to a house that has been broken into and robbed. This just adds more stress to you after coming home from vacation and can really turn your world upside down.

To prevent this from happening you can get security cameras and security systems that allow you to check on your house from your smartphone or other smart device. You can check on your house and what has gone on everyday which gives you the peace of mind of not having to worry about your house while you are away.

Do Safe Activities

No, this does not mean that you have to only do boring activities. You can still get your adrenaline rush fill while still being safe. What we don’t want to happen is you find something online to do but you go to the spot and find that you got ripped off or it becomes an unsafe situation.

To prevent this from happening, only buy online tickets from trusted resources such as Viator or from a secure, safe looking website. A good way to check is to look at Google reviews and also reviews on different tours and activities.

Have a Back Up Plan

Let's say that something falls through and your original plan doesn’t work out. You will need to have some kind of a backup plan so you have somewhere to sleep and eat if your Airbnb cancels on you last minute or you get lost. You don’t have to make double reservations or pay double on everything but just have a plan in the back of your head if something falls through so you are safe and your basic needs are taken care of.

Only Tell People You Trust

This may be something that you do not think of from the start but it is actually a bigger deal than you may think. If you post on social media that you are going to be out of the country or even town for a certain amount of time and include the dates, this lets potential robbers know that you are gone and your house is going to be empty. Stay safe and tell your neighbors to keep an eye out for your house and don’t post things on social media until after you are back.
