Things to Keep in Mind as a Beginner in Driving

It can be overwhelming when it’s your first time behind the wheel as there are so many thoughts of uncertainties going through your mind. Also, the tension that comes from trying to abide by the rules while on the road and putting the driving techniques you’ve learned into practice can be nerve-racking. But no need to worry as we have put together some useful driving tips that will make your first driving experience easy, as well as ensure your safety.

Acquaint Yourself With the Car

This is a very necessary tip to note. You need to understand the various components of your car and their functions in order not to be confused when you are about to start. Knowing these components will also increase your confidence.

For the gear knob, for instance, you need to understand the various positions of the gears and when to switch from one gear to the other. Also, you need to know about the pedals, that is, the clutch, brake, and accelerator - know their functions and memorize their positions such that you can tell which one your foot is on even without looking. Know how to use the buttons in your car and know their functions.

Relax

Do not stress yourself out by overthinking it. Try to calm down and believe you can do it. It might help to have someone who already has driving experience to be at the passenger’s seat for encouragement and support.

Be in the Right State of Mind

Never drive in a bad mood. Make sure to clear your mind from any ill thoughts that could lead to a disaster while you are driving. Empty your mind from anger or any tense situation you might be in and focus on driving safely. Also avoid being drunk when you are about to drive, as this is a major reason behind accidents.

Assume the Right Seating Position

You need to sit comfortably when driving. Sit uprightly with your back leaning towards the seat to avoid backaches. The seat has to be positioned in a way that you can easily and comfortably access the controls of the car. Also, the seat should be adjusted in a way that you can easily see all around and your eyes should be at half the height of the windshield.

Do Not Be Distracted

Driving requires you to pay full attention and be alert. You wouldn’t want to be caught off-guard and be left confused, especially being a newbie. Ensure that you put your mobile phone away and avoid eating or drinking while driving. You should also tune down the volume of your radio so you can be abreast of what is going on around you. Avoid engaging in a lengthy conversation because it could be a serious source of distraction.

Always Use Your Indicator Before Turning

Your indicator is a good means to avoid chaos and accidents among drivers while driving. It is very important to indicate before turning to help other drivers prepare to make the necessary adjustments. Your indicator should be put on at the right time.

Avoid Overspeeding

It is very easy for one to get excited and want to speed as a learner, but hey, you don’t want to do that. You need to start with driving at a low speed to build your balance during driving and gain stamina against any unexpected incident.

Use the Horn Appropriately

The horn should be an instrument of communication and not for causing noise pollution. You should never use the horn excessively but only to inform other drivers of your presence. Some people have the habit of overusing the horn which can be irritating. Others use it as a means to hasten the next vehicle in front of them or even as a signal of their turning. These are very wrong driving ethics and should never be imitated.

Keep an Ample Distance From the Vehicle in Front

It is wise to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to have enough space to maneuver just in case the driver misbehaves or if something goes wrong. It is recommended to keep a space of about 10 meters from the vehicle in front of you.

Avoid Unfamiliar Roads and Highways

Since you are a beginner, it is advisable to start with the routes you are used to as this will make things easier for you. Also, you would need to stay away from highways for now until you have mastered your driving lessons well enough. It isn’t safe for you to drive on highways just yet because the other vehicles are moving at a much higher speed and this can rather be daunting for you to handle.

Never Be Intimidated by So-Called “Experts”

As a beginner, it isn’t uncommon for other drivers to hasten you up for being slow or complain about your driving. Don’t pay any attention to that because they probably even performed worse as a beginner. What you should be concerned with is following the rules because if you get a speeding ticket or get into an accident, nobody would care about your driving status. So, it is best to think about your safety first.

Get Licensed

It is important to have your driver’s license and other documents handy. This is a precautionary measure in case of any emergencies. For sure, you probably don’t want to hit the road without having your driver’s license and other documents.

Overall, driving shouldn’t be a scary activity to you. Once you have perfected the basics, you are going to see that driving is fun.
