History of the Chevrolet Corvette

The Chevrolet Corvette is a sport car marketed by Chevrolet – a division of the American company General Motors. Over the years of release, the auto has been steadily upgraded, and nowadays seven generations of it can be observed. You can buy a Corvette on the website carbets.com. The first generation was presented by GM in 1953 as a concept car. The name portrays the car like a corvette warship – just as small and maneuverable.

C1

In 1953, the two-door snow-white C1Corvette was a completely novel phenomenon for the USA. The body made of fiberglass reinforced plastic was assembled around a tubular spaceframe and always painted white. It had an in-line engine with a capacity of almost 4 liters and Powerglide automatic transmission. The factory released only 300 of such automobiles.

That auto was produced with an independent suspension and V-shaped engines with a capacity of 7 liters. In total, 117,964 have left the conveyor belt. In 1963 was constructed Grand Sport modification in the amount of only five copies.

C3

The third generation of the Corvette based on the concept car Mako Shark II had been produced since 1968 and stayed in manufacturing until 1982. Engines and chassis were borrowed mainly from the C2 Corvette. The Corvette ZR1 version was released specifically for auto racings. It was equipped with a 430 horsepower motor.

C4

The fourth generation was a complete redesign of the Corvette since 1963. The auto carried a V8 engine from the 1982 third-generation model. Other innovations included aluminum braking callipers and all-aluminum suspension with reduced weight.

C5

The manufacturing of the C5 Corvette started in 1997 and ended in 2004. The C5 was able to develop a speed of 291 km per hour and was found to be successful by the automobile press.

C6

The C6 Corvette retained the front position of the motor and the transmission moved to the rear axle as in the C5, but that was all that C6 inherited from its predecessor. It had a more increased wheelbase than the C5.

C7 Sting Ray

Among the specificities of the construction of the body may be noted the use of carbon fiber parts mounted on aluminum chassis. Despite the size of the car, that feature made it possible to reach a relatively little weight of the auto – it was a bit more than one and a half tons.
