How to Wrap up a Debrief

When it’s over, it’s over. How do you know it’s over? There’s always more learning you can extract, but the key is to stop at the peak of the discovery process. Don’t try to wring out every bit of water from the towel. Phrases that help us move on include:
- Take a moment to sit with what you’re taking away because we’re moving on in a minute.
- We are going to do something exciting next (name it), but before we go there, is anyone burning to share something?
- I see three hands up. Can we take a moment of silence, so you can get clarity about what you want to say and then share it in a headline? No more than one sentence please.
- Anyone want to share something radically different from what’s already been said?
- Anyone who hasn’t spoken in this round, what’s one short tip you want to share?
Ways to complete the process:
- There’s a lot more that could be shared, so if you’re not complete, make a note of it and you can share it with someone during the break.
- Still have more to say? Please put it on the discussion board because we are going to...
- Does anyone have something that's so important for you to share that you're okay with delaying our lunch break?
Occasionally the group gets into the zone, comes to completion on their own and they hold a profound silence together. Acknowledge this as a magical moment or a turning point as they take in the energy of the group.
