ACTIVE RECALL: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KNOWING AND REMEMBERING

Most of us learn passively. We read, highlight, re-read. It feels productive. But research consistently shows that passive review is one of the least effective ways to retain information. What works far better is active recall: the practice of deliberately retrieving information from memory rather than simply reviewing it. You might review something after one day, then three days, then a week, then a month. Each review happens just as the memory begins to fade, which maximises the strengthening effect. This approach takes advantage of a curious quirk of memory: information which is slightly difficult to retrieve gets encoded more deeply than information that comes easily. By spacing your reviews, you create that productive difficulty on purpose, and as a result you spend less total time studying while remembering far more.

MAKING IT PRACTICAL

The challenge with these techniques is that they require planning. When should you review what? How do you keep track of dozens of concepts across different subjects or projects? This is where technology can genuinely help. Some people use simple flashcard apps. Others prefer more comprehensive tools that combine active recall and spaced repetition with features like voice recording and AI-generated summaries. This is particularly helpful if you're someone who learns better by listening or talking through ideas.
