5 Ways to Improve Your Self Love

By Mikkie Mills

There’s a saying that goes something like this, ‘you can’t love others until you love yourself’. This may not be 100% true but the general idea is true, if you are really negative and hard on yourself you will have a harder time loving others around you.

The more you practice and cultivate self love the more love you will have to give to others. There are different ways that you can improve your self love but not all of them are healthy. This can lead to more problems later on in life. To stay healthy while working on yourself practice self love on a daily basis.

Below are several healthy ways to improve your self love:

Yes, you have probably heard this piece of advice over a thousand times but there are important reasons as to why you have heard this offered so many times. Exercising is hard and it is not fun for most of us but it is important because it keeps your body in shape.

Working out boosts your serotonin levels and will help your overall health. This doesn’t mean you have to become a bodybuilder, it can be something as simple as walking around the block every evening.

Be Realistic

You really should not expect too many results in a short amount of time. This can translate into not binging on self help books or trying to do everything at once. If you are struggling with various health problems, understand that your version of success is going to look different than somebody else’s. Be patient and also be kind to yourself on your journey to improving your self love.

Practice Self Care

This can feel really awkward at first if you are not used to doing self care. If you don’t know what it means, self care is basically anything that helps to relax and rejuvenate you. This is different from self indulgence and the two can sometimes be easily mixed up. The best goal to start with is to do something that is self care at least once a day. The more you practice, the easier and more natural it will become.

So an example of self care is rubbing your feet with doterra oils before you go to bed. An example of self indulgence would be sitting on the couch for several hours mindlessly surfing the internet. Self care can also look like managing your money, budgeting and not eating out as much to save money.

Improve Your Self Esteem

There is a general consensus among people that you either have self esteem or you don’t. While this may seem accurate it can also be thought of as a sliding scale of how strong your self esteem is at the present moment.

If you do not trust yourself or feel like you struggle with self esteem there are exercises that you can practice to increase your self esteem. If you are seeing a therapist you can talk to them about it and see what they suggest.

Be Patient with Yourself

There are a lot of things in our world that are instant. You push a button on your phone and food will arrive at your front door. Unfortunately, some things are a process and take some time. Healing and learning how to love yourself is one of those things that is not going to happen overnight. You may feel like you are putting in a lot of work and not seeing any results.

This is normal and sometimes people do not see results for months and only notice them until some time has passed and they reflect on their life. Keep going and you will eventually see results as you continue to work hard.

Improving your self love is a life-long process that takes consistent effort and practice. What are some of your favorite ways to take care of yourself that are healthy? Comment below to start the conversation!
