You Are My Teacher
By Tina Olivero
I look back to sense what's here
trying to see how things have changed
helps me see what's still the same
I learned that more and more is more
there's isn't meaning behind that door
I saw my closet full from shopping days
and learned that freedom comes in other ways
I learned that anger speaks to me
of things inside, disharmony
I learned that trying to make it right
just increased my appetite
I learned that blaming you that day
was really my ego out to play
and realized that, with every word
my own demise I never heard
I learned that I made lots of mistakes
and felt the sting, like bites from snakes
but with each one came a message to know
and it was here that I would grow
I learned that as I judged you wrong
my heart could never sing its song
and missed the reason that came to me
as I told the stories from my history
I think I'll choose a new true path
to walk with flowers and flowing grass
to create on this land, a brand new life
where love rules over trouble and strife
And if I get angry or fearful this time
I'll keep my heart open for a new sign
I'll look to see what the mirror of life has to say
and see in my self what I don't like today
And as the sea swells and it turns with the tide
I'll look for your friendship, for you by my side
and as each wave comes to crash on the shore
I'll feel its streaming love, for there is no more
And in this year, I will come to show
that love can keep standing through all the blows
and with my heart, authentic and true
I'll rejoice in the lessons I learn from you.
