Give Anyway

By Shanu Goyal

Black clouds of agony were hovering around,
My soul wrecked, my dreams smashed to the ground.

I found myself amidst all dreadful circumstances,
It was horrible to bear those penetrating glances.

As if I was an extinct being marooned on an island,
Nobody there to even hold my hand.

I was in distress till I met,
A teenaged girl whose mother was on deathbed.
Her silent tears said it all,
She even lost her father when she was small.

I was in pain till I saw,
Toddlers whose minds were quite raw
Were left on their own.
This world called them orphans, they were all alone.

I thought I had deepest wound but I was wrong,
A dumb man was not able to sing a song.
A blind person unable to see this beautiful world
Was smiling and enjoying, how absurd!!!
A lame man couldn't stand on his own,
But his brow never showed a frown.

I thought I was hardest hit as I never knew
Human sufferings are not that few...
Plethora of disabilities and people's woeful plight,
With which they live each day, each night.
Some know that their end is near,
Still death gives them no fear.

All this changed my attitude,
I shed all pessimism to which I was glued.
I have so much to make life worthwhile,
And every reason now to smile.
Yes, it's time to pay back debts that are due,
To give this world something in lieu.

A vibrant smile, a loving stroke, a helping hand,
Can change a moment, if not a life…
But for this everyone strives.
Give and give anyway,
As every time is a time to repay.

We never know what we can heal,
By giving them a better feel.
Our tiny actions mean a lot,
As love and empathy cannot be bought.
This world needs you and me,
Each step forward will help someone
YOU SEE!!!

Shanu Goyal was born in the small town of Uttar Pradesh, India... "I've been writing poems since age of 12. For me, poetry is a medium to connect to my inner self. Poetry for me is divine. A sudden burst of emotions come up to the brim, I channelize my turbulent flow of thoughts and a composition takes place. My book, Silence Speaks published in 2005, is a collection of poems written in different moods. I believe we can stop running in search of happiness... I have realized that happiness is a by-product of our actions - it is a state we all can remain in if we choose to. Today, my poems are a reflection of this new 'ME' and I do not have to feel depressed, for example, to pen down a few lines."
