How to Decide What to Get Rid of
and What to Keep When Moving

Moving is a special process that affects all family members without exception. It can be a stressful phase of your life, but on the other hand, it forces you to get rid of all the unnecessary things you previously held on to. Moreover, the less stuff you have to pack and load in the truck, the easier and cheaper the moving process will be. And to make it easier for you, Movable has prepared some moving tips that will help you figure out what you need to take with you when you move, and what you'd better get rid of.

Make a moving checklist

Write a list of things you need when you move. Go through all rooms in turn, starting, for example, from the kitchen, so that it is easier to group things according to the list. Include absolutely everything you think you need for the move: clothes, furniture, appliances, dishes, books, toys, etc. Check this list to see if there will be enough space for these items in the truck and in your new home.

Go through the closet

Over the years we accumulate a lot of clothes, including some that we haven't worn for a long time. Something is dear to us as a memory, something lies on the shelf and is waiting for that special occasion. Save on shipping, don't overpay for unnecessary items. Old, worn out things that are a pity to throw away will only take up space and cost extra money for delivery. The same goes for trampled, worn-out shoes that have no place in your new home's closet. Take kits suitable for everyday wear and a few outfits for going out. Also, if possible, take clothes according to the season, no need to take winter jackets if you move to warm places.

You don't have to throw away the good and quality clothes, take care of the environment by giving it away to those in need. Look for collection points in your city or exchange them for coupons in shops.

Sort out your things

The mistake many people make when moving is to put absolutely everything in boxes indiscriminately: dishes, figurines, photo frames, shampoos, creams, etc. This can take up too much space and, consequently, you will have to pay extra for packing, transport and the work of the movers. Save space when moving, allow yourself to finally get rid of the things you haven't used for a long time. Get rid of broken, battered, chipped things and take only the things dear to your heart, for example, photo albums. Leave the things you can easily buy at the new place.

Think about what kind of dishes you will need in your new home. Take beautiful sets and your favorite mug with you, and you can easily say goodbye to old plastic containers and jars.

Take the basic hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, bathroom accessories, etc. Throw away half-empty shampoo bottles, old lotions, detergents, perfumes and cosmetics with expired expiration dates.

Also, do not forget about the list of necessary medications for the first time. Moving is the perfect time to disassemble the first-aid kit, throw away all the expired medicines and vitamins and buy new ones.

Take into account the size of new apartment

Before taking furniture from your previous place of residence, measure the space of the new apartment: the height of the ceilings, the width of doorways. This, above all, will allow you to save money on shipping. You can easily leave things and furniture that simply won't fit into your new home. The same applies to household appliances, such as a fridge, washing machine, microwave, etc. You can sell furniture and appliances that don't fit in your new apartment to save money to buy new ones.

Let's summarize the benefits of getting rid of unnecessary things before you move:

  • Lower transportation costs. One of the factors in calculating the cost of transportation in many trucking companies is the total weight. So the less you have to haul, the more you can save.
  • Lower packing costs. The more stuff you pack, the more packing material you'll need, such as boxes, bubble wrap, and furniture covers, all of which cost money.
  • An opportunity to supplement your budget. If you decide to sell some of the items you won't be taking with you, you'll have extra money to furnish your new home.
  • More space in your new home. If you're moving into a home with fewer closets and storage spaces, getting rid of the extra will make it easier to find space for your needed items.
  • Better for the environment. By reducing the number of items transported, you also reduce the amount of waste produced (packaging, etc.).
