Suburbia 101: How to Choose a Good Neighborhood
Are you considering moving to the big city for the first time? Maybe this is your first time living away from home or you've been a country bumpkin your whole life but now you feel you want the city vibe.
The city can bring a host of amazing opportunities that the city can't. From the opportunity to meet a lot of new people who are often wealthier to the chance to eat at some amazing restaurants.
How do you decide on the neighborhood to live in? A good neighborhood can be hard to come by. Luckily there are some steps you can take to improve your chances of living in a good one.
Here's everything you need to know.
1. Choose a House You Like
The first and most important thing is to choose a house you like. Too many people choose houses they don't like in an area they don't like just because they want the cheapest place. In order to make that decision, you need to ask what makes a house a home?
Often people choose houses based on status and this is not a great way of creating a life that you want. If everybody does this and just lives in a house based on the status of the area then everybody who lives there is miserable and can live a segregated life.
2. Speak With Your Neighbours First
Be sure to speak with your neighbors before you decide to move into a neighborhood. This will give you a good overview of what the place is actually like and the people that live there.
Are your neighbors young or old? Wealthy, middle class, or young people trying to make it? And are you going to be living in gated communities or a more bustling street in the suburbs? Make sure you knock on their door and try to time your visit at a time when they are likely to be in and not working.
3. Do Your Research Online
Another key factor you need to think about when buying a house or moving homes is how far the neighborhood suits your needs.
You can find a lot of this information out now online. If you are planning on having children or you have just given birth is there a nursery or school nearby that you would feel comfortable sending your children to?
Do you live in a city with bad or good drivers? Is there a good doctor's surgery nearby? How far will you have to commute to work and to the grocery store every day?
What Makes a Good Neighborhood? It Depends on Your Taste
What makes a good neighborhood depends on what you want from your life and where you are at. If you are looking to settle down then you will want to know whether there is a good nursery nearby and whether the air is too polluted for your children.
If you are just starting out in your life and want to enjoy all the big city has to offer then you might want to know how far your neighborhood is from downtown.
