What is Causing Your Headaches?

Headaches can be terribly uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating, but they are also very common. More often than not they aren’t anything to worry about, but if you are bad headaches regularly, they might be a symptom of something more serious. If you are worried about what might be causing your headaches, here are some suggestions on what might be the issue and some tips on how you can make some changes to get your headaches to stop.


It is important to make sure that you’re drinking enough liquids throughout the day to replenish your body, but it is easier than you might think to go hours without a drink. If you have a busy schedule, you can get wrapped up in your tasks for the day and forget to take a sip of water. While drinking teas and coffee will hydrate you, avoid consuming drinks that are high in sugars or caffeinated energy drinks, as too much caffeine can cause headaches, too. The sugary drinks will also not hydrate you as well and make your blood sugar levels spike higher than they should. The best thing to do is to have a water bottle with you throughout the day and try to take a sip at regular intervals.

Lack of Sleep

It is recommended that an adult should have between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night, but there are many reasons why you might not be getting to bed until late. It might be a demanding work schedule that has you working late, or perhaps you have some things that are making you anxious? It may even be that you’re struggling to get comfortable and sleep through the night if you have a bad mattress on your bed or live next to noisy neighbors. Whatever the reason you’re not getting enough shut-eye, this could be what is resulting in headaches. The disruption to your REM sleep can lower your body’s pain threshold, which is why you experience the dull ache in your head. If you want to try and improve your sleep cycle, do something that relaxes you in the hour before you go to bed, and make sure you are doing this at the same time each night. You should also strive to wake up at the same time each morning. If your mattress is poor quality, invest in a better one so you are comfortable throughout the night, too.

Eye Strain

A very common cause of headaches is eye strain, and if your headaches seem to be occurring around your eyes or behind them, then this is most likely the problem. You should see an optician for an eye test to rule this out but if this is the reason, they will be able to prescribe your glasses to assist with your vision. Once you start wearing these prescription contact lenses or glasses, you should start seeing a difference very soon as your headaches will stop. If they don’t stop after you get new glasses, you should make an appointment with your doctor to make sure your headaches aren’t a symptom of something else.

Head Injury

Have you recently been involved in an incident where you have hit your head? At the time, it might not have felt more than a slight bump, nothing to worry about. However, if in the days after the incident you have been getting frequent headaches, this should be cause for concern. It won’t necessarily be anything serious, but head injuries should never be taken lightly and always checked out. You could even book in for an MRI scan yourself without waiting for a doctor’s referral if you want answers sooner rather than later. Bad Posture

When you think of bad posture, you might assume that the only issue you will get is an aching back, neck, or shoulders. However, this can also be something that causes headaches. Again, it might be an issue with a poor-quality mattress, or perhaps you’re not sitting/standing straight throughout the day? If you do work at a desk, get an ergonomic office chair and make sure it is aligned properly with your desk. You could even try to create a standing desk, so you’re not sat down all day. Doing some yoga stretches in the morning and evenings for about 10-minutes could also help with this.

Emotional Stress

Life can be very challenging sometimes, and with these challenges comes a lot of emotional stress. It might be that you’re feeling under pressure professionally, or perhaps there are problems within your family or social circle. These circumstances can make you feel anxious, depressed, and stressed out. These feelings can be what is contributing to your headaches as your body releases chemicals that can affect your blood vessels, and this can result in tension headaches.

These are just some reasons why you might be experiencing headaches, and a lot of the time, they can be dealt with by taking OTC painkillers or holistic remedies.
