What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes (and terpenoids) are organic hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of plants and provide aroma and flavor in cannabis. The aroma that people experience from cannabis consumption, is due to the presence of terpenes. Terpenes are made from five-carbon isoprene units, which combine to form skeletons. These skeletons then help terpenes in producing varying effects. When a person smokes cannabis flower, vapes, or dab concentrates, molecules of terpenes deliver tasty, woody, herbal, pine, skunky or tropical flavors to his palate. You can get some from Weedeeliver.

Effects on Strains

Terpenes are important to cannabis, as it helps in differentiating various strains of cannabis. The effects of these strains are different, and thus terpenes help in identifying those strains. Some strains are used for promoting stress-relief and relaxation, others promote acuity and focus. Every strain has a unique terpene type and composition. Cannabis is tested for terpene content, to analyze the effects of each strain.

Types of Terpenes

More than 100 different terpenes are identified to be present in the cannabis plant. Among them, five are most common. These five terpenes are Myrcene, Pinene, Caryophyllene, Limonene, and Terpinolene. All of these terpenes are different from each other in terms of color, aroma, potential effects, potential therapeutic value, and vaporization temperature. Among them, the most common and most abundant terpene is myrcene. They are blue and have an aroma like cardamom, cloves and herbal. These are antioxidants, and help in the treatment of pain, insomnia, and inflammation. Myrcene is also found in lemongrass, mango, and thyme.

Terpenes are found in cannabis and hemp plants. These give aroma and color to cannabis, and also help in differentiating the effects of the various strains of cannabis. These qualities make terpenes one of the vital components of cannabis because people are attracted to the smell of the cannabis when they smoke it through dab tools or vape through a pen.
