Simple Ways to Boost Your Mental Health
If you’re currently on lockdown due to Covid-19, you might find your mental health is starting to plummet. Having your normal routine disrupted, dealing with the stress of the unknown, feeling isolated from the world — it is little wonder why you might be feeling anxious or depressed during this time.
Finding simple ways to take care of your mental health during this time is essential. As it is, there are many simple ways to provide a quick boost to your mental health. Consider incorporating some of the following ideas into your routine.
Engage in a favorite hobby
One quick way to boost your mental health is to engage in a favorite hobby. Take a break from the stressors in life to read a new book, go for a hike, or plan an art project. Engaging in a favorite hobby gives you the chance to do something you truly enjoy, which is a great way to provide yourself with some much-needed self-care. Doing something you love can help you feel happy and can be a welcomed distraction during hard times.
Plan daily exercise
Getting up and moving, even if only to take a quick walk around your neighborhood, is a great way to give your mood a boost. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins, which are natural chemicals in your brain that help you feel good. Find a support system
Isolation and feeling alone can have a negative impact on your mental health. Even if you’re currently under a stay-at-home order and can’t see your friends and family, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t find other ways to engage with them. For example, you can schedule a time to FaceTime or Skype with them. Or, you can try to join an online community of people that share your interests. Having people to talk to gives you a support system, which is good for your mental health.
Do something relaxing
Try to find something that allows you to relax without thinking of stressors. Many find mindful meditation a good way to relax. To practice mindful meditation, find a quiet place to sit, close your eyes, and focus on breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. There are online videos that will help walk you through a meditation session if you have never done it before. Other ways to relax include taking a bath, practicing yoga, and going for a walk.
Develop realistic goals
Setting large goals, such as finding a new job, can seem overwhelming and can cause you stress and anxiety. Break those larger goals into smaller, more realistic goals that lead up to a larger goal. In the example of finding a new job, break that into smaller steps, such as revising your resume, going to a networking event, developing a cover letter, and eventually applying to a set number of jobs each day. Small goals can help keep larger goals more manageable.
Go on a trip
Okay — so while you won’t want to travel until the threat of the coronavirus passes, that doesn’t mean you can’t start dreaming about your next trip! There are benefits to traveling for mental health. Breaking your normal routine and taking a break from your everyday life is a great way to relax. And if you don’t want to wait until the quarantine is over, you can always schedule a virtual trip to that exotic location you always wanted to visit (bring your imagination)!

A counselor can help you navigate your thoughts and understand your feelings. They can also help you begin to develop healthy coping strategies that you can use to boost your mood. Incorporating different coping strategies into your daily routine to deal with stress, anxiety, and depression is a good way to help boost your mental health.
