What Are the Different Types of Dental Treatments That Exist Today?

Dental Treatment

The oldest known example of dentistry, a tooth partially cleaned using flint tools, comes from Italy around 14,000 years ago. Dentistry has come a long way since then, even in recent decades, both in terms of quality of treatment and the different types of dental treatment widely available.

Today, there is a wide range of dental procedures that your local dentist can perform. General dentistry is focused on treating and preventing oral disease, while cosmetic dentistry deals with improving the overall aesthetic of a person's teeth and smile.

In this blog post, we will take a look at some of the most common types of dental treatments available.

Teeth Cleaning

Brushing and flossing daily is essential to maintaining our dental health. Even still, it is recommended that you visit your dentist twice yearly for a more thorough cleaning. These visits to the dentist are also a great chance to spot any possible dental issues early, rather than letting them go ignored.

Extractions

There are different reasons why a dentist may have to extract a tooth. These include:

  • Tooth decay
  • Periodontal or gum disease
  • Trauma
  • Trauma

Modern dentistry helps to limit the discomfort of tooth extractions, though there may be some pain once the numbness wears off.

Fillings

Fillings help to restore the integrity and function of missing tooth structure. If you have a cavity, a filling may be required, for example.

Other reasons for fillings include fractured teeth, gradual loss of tooth structure, and discolored teeth.

Veneers

Your dentist may recommend either composite or porcelain dental veneers if your teeth are discolored, crooked, sharp/pointed, or chipped.

They are thin coverings that are attached to the front of teeth. The process is generally painless and is popular among people unhappy with the appearance of their smile.

Root Canal

This dental procedure may be required if you have a tooth or teeth that are damaged or diseased. It involves the removal of a tooth's pulp, treating the infection using a topical antibiotic, and adding a temporary filling.

While many people shudder when they hear the phrase 'root canal', in reality, it is a relatively simple procedure.

Crowns

A dental crown is a cap for a damaged tooth, which can be made from porcelain, metal, ceramic, or other materials. You may require a crown if you have cracked, weakened, or severely worn down teeth.
