What to Expect During and After Tubal Reversal Surgery

63% of American women without children said they didn't want to have any. Everyone has their own reasons for not wanting children, and one of the surest ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies is to have your tubes tied.

You might've had this surgery years ago because you didn't want kids. But circumstances have changed, and you're thinking of getting a tubal ligation reversal.

The good news is, a tubal reversal can often be done. However, what should you expect during and after surgery? The answers may be enough to sway you one way or another.

During the Surgery

The doctor will require you to refrain from eating and drinking after midnight on the day before your surgery. If your surgery isn't until later in the day, then make sure you don't eat or drink at least eight hours beforehand.

You should take the prescribed medications when told to, with a small sip of water.

After arriving at the hospital or clinic, the surgery will take two to three hours to complete.

The actual tubal reversal surgery will be done either laparoscopically or through a small incision in your abdomen. The method selected will depend on the type of tubal ligation you had and what state your body's in. If it's been a long time since you got your tubes tied, or there's extensive damage, you might need open surgery (the second option).

The surgeon will then remove anything blocking your tubes and then repair them with small stitches. Do note that reversing a tubal ligation may not always be successful.

After the Surgery

Once you wake up from surgery, you'll be kept in observation for up to three hours. The doctor will then send you home with prescription antibiotics and pain medications. You'll need someone to help you get home, as you won't be able to drive.

You can remove your outer wound dressing after two days, and the strips underneath after a week. When you shower, make sure the incision area stays dry.

You can eat a normal diet after a few days, and resume some light normal activities after a week. However, don't lift anything more than 10 pounds for at least two weeks.

You can start trying for a baby as soon as you're healed up and feel comfortable with it. If you'd like to learn more, is a great place to start.

Is a Tubal Reversal Right for You?

If you're considering expanding your family, then a tubal reversal can be in the cards.

It can be a tough process though, which can be difficult on both your body and mental health. Not to mention, the tubal ligation reversal cost can be high, and it doesn't always work.

It's best to talk things out with your partner (if you have one) and your doctor. Together, you can figure out the best plan moving forward.
