8 Tips for Healthy and Happy Feet

Proper foot care can increase your mobility and ability to participate in physical activities. Foot care entails maintaining hygiene, consulting a foot doctor regularly, and finding the right shoes. Here are a few tips for maintaining healthy and happy feet:

1. Maintain Proper Hygiene 

Wash your feet daily with warm water and mild soap to eliminate dirt and bacteria. Wipe them dry before wearing your socks or shoes, paying attention to often-forgotten areas like between your toes. This can reduce the risk of fungus growth, infections, and odors. 

If you have sweaty feet, get some breathable wool or cotton socks to help manage the sweat. Change the socks often to prevent rashes or athlete's foot. 

2. Moisturize Regularly

Dry skin is susceptible to cracks, which may harbor infections. Avoid cracks in your skin by moisturizing your feet after cleaning them. This is key during winter, as the skin tends to be drier when cold. Avoid moisturizing between your toes, as this may increase your risk of an infection. 

3. Visit a Foot Doctor 

You’re more predisposed to conditions like diabetes and osteoarthritis with age. These conditions can cause foot problems if not managed. Schedule an exam with a professional foot doctor even when you’re not hurt.

4. Massage and Move Your Feet

High heels can increase your risk of falls and broken or twisted ankles. If you must wear high heels, wear those with broad heels to increase the surface area contact between you and the ground. This can limit your risk of tripping and falling. 

Shoes that are too tight can increase your risk of developing sores, blisters, and corns. Try on shoes before buying them to make sure they fit. Avoid buying tight shoes thinking they’ll stretch with time, as this can cause unnecessary damage to your feet. Look for good foot support in your shoes. Their soles should be cushioned enough to protect your feet during high-impact activities like running. 

6. Exercise Regularly

Overweight people may be more susceptible to foot problems as their weight puts a lot of pressure on their feet. This is especially an issue when walking up inclines or stairs. Exercising can help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid foot problems. 

7. Rotate Your Shoes 

Invest in several shoes so you can change them up. Rotating your shoes allows them to air out. This can reduce the risk of odors and fungal growth. It can also give your feet time to recover from hot spots caused by uncomfortable shoes. 

8. Avoid Flip Flops 

While flip-flops can feel comfortable, they provide little to no ankle or arch support. This can strain your Achilles tendon and cause foot pain. If you must wear flip-flops, only do so in areas they’re intended for, like the beach or at the pool.
