Making Your Love for Cooking a Career

By Indy Summers

Cooking is one of life's most satisfying activities. Taking a handful of ingredients and turning them into a fabulous dinner is a great skill. Many people learn to cook from a beloved relative. As they grew up, they may think about turning their love of food into a career. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to make a living cooking. Many companies want to hire those who know how to cook everything from seafood to dessert. If you're thinking about entering this field, you'll find many possible career choices. You'll also find a world of job openings that pay well and let you do exactly what you love to do every single day on the job.

Get an Education

One option for those who want to enter the culinary world is attending a cooking school. Cooking schools range from a few weeks studying a trade to colleges such as the Culinary Institute of America that offer two year and four year college degrees. Formal study is an excellent idea for those who have little background in food service. Even those who have spent many years studying may still want to add a degree indicating what they've mastered to show potential employers exactly what they know. A degree in this area can also lead to other opportunities and help provide people with the background to do things such as open up their own restaurant.

On-the-Job Training

Another possible way to turn cooking into a full time job is by getting on the job training. Many restaurants, catering halls and other places devoted to food service hire people from all backgrounds. Learning on the job is an ideal way to see if this part of the economy is a fit with your skills and personal talents. People who work in a restaurant in any position can see how the restaurant operates each day and each week. They can learn from those who have already opened up their own restaurant and know exactly how to create wonderful, authentic Italian food to please customers and stay in business for a long time. This is a good path for those who are not sure what kind of career they want. Even a waitress can learn how food is prepared and delivered as well as how to set a table, how to use a hoshizaki ice machine, and how to offer superior customer service.

Other Possible Career Paths

There are many possible career paths in the world of food service. People can specialize in a specific type of cooking. For example, pastry chefs are very much in demand by high end restaurants. Pastry chefs do things such as create elaborate desserts, bake bread and make ice cream. Another possibility is a caterer. Caterers offer people food in the location of their choice. A caterer provides all kinds of special meals including food for a wedding reception, company parties and at home celebrations of all kinds. You can even be a caterer out of your own home. People who are drawn to becoming entrepreneurs can start their own business by opening up a restaurant, offering services as a personal chef. A trained chef can also offer classes to share their own personal knowledge of the culinary world and help others learn to love it as much as they do.

Loving What You Do

When you really like what you do, it's easy to develop a passion for it. Using fresh ingredients and transforming them into dishes other people enjoy eating is an act of art and one of love. Cooking is an opportunity to give back to others in many ways large and small. It's also an opportunity to be fully engaged in the act deeply delightful feel of feeding others. If you love to eat and love to cook, there are many ways to transform your love into a great job. Think about what you love best and you'll find the right career in the culinary world.
