5 Morning Routines That Are Incredibly Therapeutic

By Indy Summers

There's a reason people turn to self care as a form of therapy. It's the same secret that all these beauty bloggers and yoga enthusiasts are tapping into--the therapy found in going through a daily routine for self care. Having a basic routine can significantly reduce one's anxiety and prepare them for the day ahead.

Essential Therapeutic Routines

Why leave the therapeutic routines to the vloggers and bloggers? Whether your mornings start off with a shower or drinking your morning cup of water, it's time to take a closer look at what therapeutic routines you can use each morning. Consider the following ideas:

  1. Start the Day with Stretches
Part of what makes any routine therapeutics is that it adds a sense of ritual to the day. Instead of waking each day to chaos and a schedule filled with activities, a stable routine allows you to establish a sense of control. One such routine every person should perform every morning is stretching.

Starting the day off with stretching will allow you to get your body and mind in sync. As your body starts to wake up, your heart rate will increase as you get more and more energized. The more you start to get used to this aspect of your routine, you may want to increase your stretching to a few basic exercises to get your blood flowing even more.

  2. Get Energized by Drinking a Glass of Water
Another guaranteed way to tap into the therapeutic power of routine is to start the day by getting hydrated. Gulping down a cup (or more) of water will kick start your metabolism, flush out toxins, get your brain energized, and help you prepare for the day ahead. This is especially important for people that tend to be dehydrated or particularly tired during the day.

The more water you have in your system, the better you will be able to function. To encourage this part of the routine, keep a full glass or bottle of water by the bed so you'll remember to drink it when you wake up.

  3. Meditate to Center Yourself
Ideally, you'll have enjoyed a restful sleep before beginning your morning routine. However, this isn't always the case. Perhaps you were worried about an impending deadline or some unresolved conflict. Whatever the situation, you don't want to carry these anxieties with you throughout the day.

Right after you wake up, take a few minutes to meditate. Use this time to center yourself, be still, and focus on breathing. As you meditate, allow your mind to become empty as you put all your attention into your breaths. With regular meditation, you'll find that you are more positive and able to begin the day feeling better about yourself and the rest of the world.

  4. Avoid Social Media Until Later
While it can be exciting to wake up to see what has changed on social media while you were sleeping, this habit is unhealthy in the long-term. Even if you aren't intentionally doing so, seeing other people posting their opinions, arguments, life achievements, and the like can lead to you feeling negatively towards yourselves.

In a way, checking social media so early in the morning is inviting all of the chaos of each platform into your mind and your day. Instead of habitually turning to Instagram after you wake up, save that for later on during the day.

  5. Get to Some Sunlight
Vitamin D plays a major role in how good you feel about yourself. The morning sun works to improve your alertness and your overall mood. The exposure to sunlight will boost your serotonin levels, allowing you to feel calmer and more at peace.

However, too much sun exposure can damage your skin and hair. Make sure to use sunscreen on your skin and use coconut oil for your hair. Coconut oil might sound weird for your hair but it actually has a built in sunscreen with an SPF of 8. If the weather's not too cold outside, you might want to make taking a walk in the morning part of your routine. This will ensure that you have ample time to soak up the sun before starting your day.

It's time to take control of your mornings. Use these five life-changing routines to create a sense of peace that will last you all day long.
