How to Stay Safe as a Runner

Running is an excellent way to exercise. It gets your heart rate up quickly, helps build strong bones and muscles, and aids in maintaining a healthy weight. Unfortunately, though, there are some safety issues when putting on those running shoes and running through the neighborhood. So, whether you’re a newbie runner or have entered numerous marathons, here’s how to stay safe. 

Treat Injuries as Soon as Possible 

Injuries are common in every exercise. When it comes to running, your main risks are in your knees and ankles, as they will be taking most of the weight while you run. If you injure yourself in any way, make sure you seek medical attention as soon as possible, as this will ensure the injury isn’t prolonged. Avoid Wearing Headphones 

The idea of running while listening to your favorite tunes is appealing, but it can be dangerous, especially if you run near roads. You might not be able to hear a car behind you or a person running near you. To avoid this, get into the habit of listening to the open world while you run. At least that way, you won’t have to worry about an earbud falling out! 

Wear the Correct Gear 

It’s always better to avoid an injury than to treat one, so wear the correct gear to decrease the chances of hurting yourself. That usually includes a well-fitted sports bra, comfortable and airy clothes, and high-quality running shoes. 

Drink Lots of Water

Dehydration is a risk while running, especially during high temperatures. To make sure there’s no risk of you passing out, drink plenty of water before, during, and after your run. There are plenty of excellent runner’s water bottles out there so that you’ll barely feel like you’re carrying one. 

Be Traffic-Aware 

Runners are at risk of traffic accidents, so when you can, steer as clear of the roads as possible. When you do have to run on the road, try to run on the side where you can see traffic coming. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to move out of the way. 

Run in Daylight 

It might not always be possible, but it’s important to run in the daylight as much as possible. Many people, especially women, are at risk of being attacked when running during dark hours. By scheduling your runs during the day, you’ll feel much more at ease. 

Stick to Places You Know 

Exploring new places is always fun, but you should stick to the tracks you know if you want to stay as safe as possible. Try to run where other people frequently go, too, so that you are constantly surrounded by others. A lonely runner is always in more danger than one in a crowd. 

Running doesn’t have to be dangerous. By taking cautionary steps, you can get fit without the worry of dangers or accidents.
