4 Soothing Activities for Stressful Days

Soothing Activities

Stress is a natural reaction to challenging situations in life. But that doesn’t make it any easier to deal with! And, sadly, almost half of Americans describe an increase in stress over the last 5 years.

Are you familiar with the struggle and on the hunt for some tools to alleviate stress on difficult days? Well, you’re in the right place! Today we’re going through a list of self-soothing activities that should make it easier to cope in stressful situations.

1. Mindfulness

Mindful meditation has been practiced for millennia as an effective way to find inner peace. The result? You can trust its credentials as a self-soothing tool to help combat stress!

Defined as "non-judgmental awareness of the present moment", you're not trying to run away from your negative feelings. Instead, you hit pause, breath, bring your attention to whatever’s going on (both inside and out), and focus on it without judging yourself. Mindfulness is a skill that takes time to master, but it can be a powerful antidote to stressful situations if you persevere with it.

2. Deep Breathing

Breathing exercises offer another effective way to master challenging emotional experiences, including stress. There are dozens of these exercises available (many of which derive from ancient yogic practices). But the 4-7-8 technique is a good introductory method that can have profound effects.

You breathe in through your nose to a count of 4 and hold it at the top for 7. Then breathe out through your mouth to the count of 8! Repeat that simple process until you’re feeling in greater control of your emotions.

3. Hug Yourself

Give yourself a big bear hug. Don’t think about it, just do it! Wrap your arms around your body and hug yourself tight.

You might feel silly at the start, but this is a legitimate self-soothing technique called ‘self-holding’. It’s a way of showing yourself some love that releases the same feel-good neurochemicals you get whenever you get a hug from someone else!

4. Make a Cup of Herbal Tea!

If all else fails, then we suggest brewing yourself a cup of delicious herbal tea! That might sound wacky, but almost everyone’s experienced the calming effects it can deliver. Self-care activities don't get much simpler or more effective.

Whether you have a set ritual or not, the simple act of making and sipping a cup of hot tea can make an almighty stress-relieving difference. You could even check out these botanical supplements to put in your cup and maximize the soothing impact.
