7 Reasons I Started to
Be an Eco-Friendly Mom

By Melanie Saunders

I giggle at the moms who spent an inordinate amount of time preaching about the earth and living naturally. I called them crunchy hippies and passively disregarded the messages they were trying to send. Then I realized I had a lot of misconceptions about what they were doing and why they were doing it, and I found myself becoming one of them. My life, and the lives of my children, are better because of the way we live now. It was easy to make the transition for a number of reasons.

  1. I Worried About The Future
It seems like every time I watch the news, there’s a grave new warning about how damage to the environment is destroying the planet. As a mother, I needed to think about the future I was leaving for my children. I can’t change what everyone else is doing, but I have full control over the choices I make. It helps me keep my conscience clear.
  2. My Kids Were Eating Junk
We all have those mommy moments where our kids wake up approximately two hours after we’ve gone to sleep. This lead to me relying on quick fixes like cereals and microwave breakfasts because I didn’t have the time to prepare food – my kids could handle that stuff themselves. Meal prepping breakfast eliminated all of that extra packaging and allowed me to provide wholesome food for my kids. Best of all? I can get that extra hour of sleep when I don’t need to wake up to cook.
  3. My House Felt Too Small
I accumulated a lot of junk. That’s a natural process when you have kids. It felt like the house was shrinking by the moment. I pledged to stop buying mass produced junk toys and flat-pack furniture that doesn’t last longer than a year. I recycled what I could, and I had 1300 Rubbish come get the rest. We don’t buy any plastic or cheap wooden goods that we don’t need anymore (because they will inevitably end up in a landfill), and now I have a ton of extra space.
  4. I Was Spending Too Much Money
The utility bills were really high. That always happens when you have kids, because they have a tendency to use a lot of water and power. I got low flow toilets and installed a few small solar panels on my roof. My bills went down almost instantly, and I’m looking into maximizing my savings by going full solar.
  5. I Wanted To Teach My Children Things They Wouldn’t Learn in School
Where does food come from? My kids probably thought it magically appeared in the grocery store before we started our vegetable and herb garden. It’s modest, but it supplements our diets. We’re able to keep it free from synthetic pesticides, water it with recycled rainwater, and eat the things we grow. They understand how food is produced, and they’d be able to grow a garden all on their own.
  6. We All Needed To Be a Little More Active
My kids enjoy the occasional ice cream cone. I stopped loading up the car, because it’s half an hour to walk to the dessert shop. They get their sweet treat, but they’ve worked off a little energy to make the room for it. Best of all, I’m not using any fossil fuel or releasing anything into the air when we take a walk together. We’re bonding, we’re having fun, and we get a little reward for doing it. Mom deserves a vanilla orange swirl cone, too.
  7. Because Society is Changing
With the planet in dire straits, many people and businesses are making strides to be as renewable and sustainable as possible. It’s a concept that’s only going to spread. By adopting this lifestyle to the best of my ability, I can set an example for my children to follow. I’m placing my hope in this generation to make a real difference.

Being an eco-friendly mom isn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I’ve found that it gives me plenty of excuses to spend less time in my office and more time with my kids. It’s unified us, it’s educated us, and it’s empowered us to change the world.
