How Sunshine Improves Mental
and Physical Health

By Jade Pulman

In the past few years, growing awareness of skin cancer has led to many people avoiding sun. Though it is true that too much sun can be dangerous, it can be just as bad to not get enough sunlight. There are many positive effects associated with sunlight. Going into the sun affects your physical health by building your vitamin D levels, and it also improves mental health by raising levels of serotonin, an important hormone. Sunshine provides these valuable benefits each time you step outside.

Get Stronger Bones

Vitamin D has an essential role in calcium absorption. Without the ability to absorb calcium, the bones can begin to lose minerals faster than they can replace them, resulting fragile and brittle bones that break easily. Those who want to avoid osteoporosis need to make sure they get plenty of sunlight and calcium to keep the bones strong in old age.

Avoid Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that worsens during the winter. This condition seems to be caused by the steadily darkening days of fall and winter, and it can cause low energy, weight gain, feelings of depression, and trouble waking up each day. Bright sunlight is one of the best ways to treat this condition.

Fight Off Infections

When you have a cold or a flu, it is still important to spend a little time in the sun. The body needs vitamin D to build the cells of the immune system. Without enough sunlight, your body may not be able to kill off bacteria, viruses, and other infections.

Prevent Anxiety Problems

The association between sunlight exposure and reduced anxiety disorders is yet another reason to search for pool builders near me as soon as you can. So far researchers are not exactly sure if the link between sunlight and less anxiety is due to boosted vitamin D levels of higher levels of the relaxing hormone serotonin. Either way, sunshine can be a great way to reduce panic attacks and other anxiety disorders.

Reduce Diabetes Risks

It is true that the primary cause of type 2 diabetes is eating so much sugar that you lose the ability to metabolize it properly with insulin. but it turns out that the vitamin D you get from sun also affects your diabetes risk. When you get more vitamin D, the body reduces the activity of macrophages, a special type of cell that causes insulin resistance to occur. Researchers are finding those that get a big dose of vitamin D every day are able to better process blood sugar.

Feel Happier

Getting more sunshine can help to lower your risk of depression and anxiety, but it is even good for you if you are not worried about getting these mental health disorders. Each time you are exposed to sunlight, your brain releases hormones that help you to feel calm, happy, and focused. This little mood boost from the sun can help to make your day better, and if you do it often enough, you might find that you feel like a generally happier and more positive person.

Protect Your Eyesight

There are a growing number of studies that find eyesight and sun exposure are closely linked because vitamin D is used for several important functions in the eyes. People are more likely to be shortsighted if they do not spend a lot of time outdoors as a child, and seniors are more likely to suffer from age related macular degeneration if they have lower levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiencies also tend to cause dry, stinging, fatigued, and blurry eyes. In general, if you want strong eyes, you need to remember to spend time outside in the sunlight.
