How to Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Being able to smile with confidence is something everyone wants. Yellowing, stained teeth and bad breath is not only off-putting to others, but it can also be embarrassing for the person with the issue. If you eat a lot of foods with high sugar content, drink a lot of coffee, tea, or other beverages that stain your teeth, you may have noticed your smile isn’t as dazzling as you’d like.

Although using whitening toothpaste can help reduce the staining, this isn’t enough to practice good oral hygiene and you might be missing other problem areas. If you want to improve your overall oral health, think about the following points and try to implement them into your daily lifestyle.

Find a Good Dentist

If you’re not already signed up with a dentist you should do so as soon as possible. To make sure your teeth and gums are in good shape it’s recommended that you have a check-up with your dentist once every six months. They will be able to check areas you can’t reach or see yourself and can offer you a deep-clean where necessary to get rid of any plaque that has built up over time. This is important as plaque can cause damage to your enamel and can encourage harmful bacteria to develop in your mouth. Research good dentists in your local area to make sure you’re getting the best treatment you can.

Don’t Ignore Pain

If you experience toothache or notice that you’re spitting blood after you clean your teeth, don’t ignore these signs. Bleeding or swollen gums can be a sign of gingivitis and if this isn’t treated early on, it could develop into the more serious periodontal disease that could lead to the loss of your teeth.

A toothache could indicate you need a filling or that there are issues with your wisdom teeth. A common problem people find with wisdom teeth is that they are impacted, which means they don’t have enough room to grow or are growing at a bad angle. This can cause infection from gaps in your gums due to partial eruption or abscesses. If you have a problem like this, you will need to have your wisdom teeth removed. Regular Cleaning

To practice good oral hygiene, you must clean your teeth twice daily, once in the morning and again before you go to bed. This routine will reduce plaque build-up and get rid of any leftover bits of food that are stuck in your teeth before it begins to decay. Use a fluoride toothpaste so that your enamel is getting what it needs to recover and remain strong. Manual toothbrushes are perfectly fine to use, but for a better clean, consider investing in an electric toothbrush as they will do a more thorough job. You should also be wary of how much pressure you’re using when brushing your teeth too. If you’re pushing down too hard you could be wearing away your gums and enamel.

Flossing is just as important as regular brushing, too. By adding this to your daily oral hygiene routine, you will be getting rid of the plaque and other bits off food that gets stuck in the gaps between your teeth. Toothbrushes aren’t always able to effectively clean these areas, which is why using the finer tooth floss is a better tool for the job. You can do this after each meal, or at least once a day, preferably during your night-time cleaning. Finally, rinse your mouth out with some fluoride mouthwash (ideally alcohol-free) to rinse away any residue leftover from brushing and flossing, leaving you with a clean mouth and fresh breath.

Diet

When thinking about your diet you might assume this has more to do with maintaining a healthy weight and heart health, but it also has a direct effect on your oral hygiene, too. Avoid consuming sugary and highly acidic foods as they will rot and erode your teeth if eaten to excess. Instead, try to get enough Vitamin C as this is good for your gums, as well as getting enough calcium each day which will keep your enamel strong.

Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables will provide these vitamins and minerals for you. Drinking plenty of water will also help keep your mouth healthy and help to wash away residual food that might be stuck in your mouth after meals.

Quit Smoking

Finally, if you’re a smoker you should seriously consider quitting if you want better oral health (and better health in general!) You will have heard that countless times no doubt, but smoking can indeed damage your gums as well as your lungs. As a smoker, you increase your risk of mouth cancer and developing periodontal disease as the chemicals in the smoke increases the amount of plaque build-up in your mouth. It will also cause far more staining on your teeth due to the nicotine. For a healthier mouth and fresher breath, quit smoking.
