How to Clear Your Head

Meditation

By Kari Oakley

The world is stressful. We have that take up 60% of our waking hours or school and college classes that sometimes take up 90% of our time. Then, beyond the scope of our immediate lives, the media is full of natural disasters and horrible things that add bit by bit to the levels of stress that we’re already trying to balance.

Considering all of this, it’s no wonder that 18% of the population, nearly 40 million people, suffer from anxiety and depression. It’s a completely real issue that we’re facing. Millions more struggle with it as an undiagnosed issue just hoping to survive. In a world this chaotic, it is a necessity to find the time to clear our minds and release all of the stress that has built up day after day.

1. It’s Okay to Take a “Me-Day”

A “me-day” is a day dedicated to healing your mind. Your brain is tender and impressionable. If it’s subjected to a bad situation long enough, it will mold itself to fit that shape and put up helpful yet harmful barriers to block you from trauma. The problem is that sometimes those barriers will interfere with your ability to live a healthy and normal life. For the sake of your brain, take a day off every once in a while.

On your day off, avoid anything that would cause stress and pamper yourself. If you love going to the gym, then spend as much time there as you would like. If you love shopping, go shopping (within a reasonable budget). If you’re a swimmer, then go swimming. Dirt bikers should hit the trails, dog lovers should spend all day cuddled up with their dog, etc. Make sure the day is used to pamper you and to make sure that you know that you love yourself. Speak to yourself in your very own love language so that you can be as relaxed as possible.

2. Rethink Your Costs and Expenses

It’s a proven fact that the number one cause of stress today is money. We spend countless hours worrying over how we’ll pay for this and that and then spend our extra money on something that we might not need. To reduce your stress when it comes to finances, rethink your expenses.

Go through your list of bills that you spend every month—car insurance, credit card debts, home warranties, pest control—and figure out what it is that you need and what it is that you don’t need. Often, you can go out and find cheap car insurance that will save you hundreds of dollars every month and still give you the coverage that you need.

You might want to rethink your pest control plan and consider buying chemicals online and doing it yourself instead or not doing it at all. Find the things that you can cut out of your budget and what needs to stay.

3. Try Something New

Everyone needs a way to vent out stress, frustration, anger, and bitterness since we all have to deal with it every day. So find something that you can do every morning and every night that will help you release your stress. Some people find that practicing yoga in the morning and then a light flow at night helps them to stay more grounded in the world.

Others prefer meditation to help their minds to process the events that are happening in their lives. There are other ways as well that could help such as stretching, jogging, reading, painting and drawing, and listening to relaxing music. Whatever it is that you chose to do, make sure that it’s something that relaxes and calms you.

Your mind is more important than you might think. It’s fragile as well. You need to recognize that no matter who you are, you will benefit from finding ways to release stress from your mind. Take the time that you need to and focus on your mental health.
