As technology changes, so do the lives we live. Nowadays, so many people are focused on building their social media presence. They consider their social media life more important than the physical one they live. It can take an ultimate toll on your mental health if you're not careful. That's why it's crucial to have a healthy relationship with social media.
When you're browsing social media, you have to take it with a grain of salt. Remember that not everything is real. You can see these glamorous lives and be jealous of them. They're not all real. People only show what they want to show. They hide away the dark parts. The same should go for you. Don't put all your business out on social media because it'll have you craving a life that's not real.
Every now and then, you need to shut off your phone. It's important to take a break from social media and remember to live in the moment. More often than not, that's hard to do because social media is addicting. A mental health counselor can help you break the cycle of addiction. They can show you what it's like to put yourself in the physical world without wondering what you're going to post next or what others are doing. It's great to take a break sometimes and remember that there's more to life outside of social media.
It's natural to want to compare yourself to other people. Every time you log onto Facebook or Instagram, you're faced with these gorgeous lives. You see perfect marriages, nice homes, and great careers. It's only natural to want that life. When you crave those other lives, you pick apart your own. It can really cause you to fall into a state of depression. Instead, you need to step back and remember that you're on your own journey. Nobody's life is perfect. Social media isn't always real. You have to remember that there are also people out there who are jealous of your life. Everyone has their own problems and struggles, they just don't want to always put them out there on social media.
When everyone takes to social media to brag about how perfect their lives, it causes problems near and far. Not only are you holding yourself to unrealistic expectations, but you're also holding everyone else to them as well. It's okay to post accomplishments on social media. Keep them private and to a minimum. Instead of taking to Facebook to brag, do something nice for yourself in the real world. Celebrate with friends and family. Once you find yourself bragging, it's hard to stop. You fall into this trap of where you can see how perfect life would be if good things like that always happened. You then try to recreate that each and every day and you realize it's not possible.
You don't have to get rid of social media completely. You just have to learn to limit yourself. There's a whole world out there that exists beyond Facebook. You don't have to spend every waking second seeing what other people are doing and documenting your life. Instead, go out there and live life. Leave your phone at home. Limit your time online. By doing all of these things, you'll find that life becomes so much more rewarding. No longer are you doing things for others, you're doing them for yourself.
