Physical and Mental Health Go Together

By Mikkie Mills

Physical and mental health are tied very closely together. Mental stress is a known factor in many conditions such as heart disease, debilitating headaches, digestive disorders and lowered immune system function. It is also commonly accepted that our physical health plays a strong role in our mental health. Poor physical condition that leads to aches and pains can contribute to raised cortisol levels that are associated with stress. People who struggle with their weight may have lowered self-esteem and experience depression over their inability to slim down. That's why it's important to consistently work on improving both physical and mental health. People who stay healthy generally experience lower stress and improved mental health as well. Here are a few easy ways to work on your mental and your physical health at the same time.

Fitness Without A Gym

Most physical improvement programs focus heavily on exercise. Exercise is a great way to boost endorphins and improve our mood. It's also important for building bone and muscle and maintaining flexibility. Fitness programs don't have to involve punishing yourself with high impact cardio if you hate that kind of thing. Gardening or housework can be exercise as long as your get your heart rate up and keep moving. Just try to set a time for 20 minutes a few times a week and jump into some vigorous sweeping, dusting, raking or weeding. Any of these household activities can be exercise if you sustain them long enough.

Exercise can also include fun things you do with friends. Do you like to window shop and brunch? Why not visit a mall and walk around a few times a week with a pal first thing in the morning, then go off for a healthy brunch to round out the excursion? If your both up to it, biking short distances away for lunch or dinner can be a lot of fun. If not with a friend, make it a habit to walk to some of your weekly errands. Take a Sunday evening stroll to the corner shop to pick up your milk, or bike over the post office twice a week to send a postcard to a friend who needs encouragement. Try to incorporate exercise by doing what you already do routinely in a more active way.

Diet is Key to Losing Weight

Diet is going to play an important role in improving your health. Without an adjustment to diet most people will not experience weight loss through workouts alone. Many people are now realizing that using a keto diet is one of the easiest ways to manage what you eat without sacrificing taste and enjoyment. The keto diet is basically a shortcut to getting your body to burn fat without having to starve yourself. It works on the principle that the body will readily burn fat when carbs are not available as quick and easy fuel. Pre-made keto meals are readily available. Since they are high in fat and protein they are also delicious versions of recipes you probably already know and love.

A lot of convenience food tends to be high in carbs and fat. Meals like these tend to depress us mentally and physically as the body slows down while digesting them. Diets that increase our metabolic rate also tend to improve mood and increase mental alertness. Many companies offer prepared meals that adhere to the keto diet to help people stay on these diets effortlessly.

If you want a quick and easy shortcut to improving your mental and physical health, try making some small changes that make a big impact. Adjusting most diets to meet the keto guidelines is easy and doesn't require you to eat tasteless food. Adding in some exercise along with fun social time walking or biking out with friends is almost like making a play date to improve your health. Try these easy adjustments to your lifestyle to see some big changes.
