Boost Cognitive Function With These Natural Hacks

By Mikkie Mills

As we get older, cognitive decline is to be expected, but we can stave off that degeneration with the things we do now. By eating the right foods and engaging in practices that strengthen memory, attention, and higher mental functioning, we can keep our minds stronger for longer.

The Keto Diet Secret Benefits

Most people begin the ketogenic diet as a means of losing or managing weight, because the diet relies on plenty of proteins and fats, while virtually eliminating carbs. If that sounds confusing, there are plenty of keto meal delivery plans to help you organize your meals. In addition to helping people lose weight, the diet has also helped eliminate gout and boost energy levels, but that's not all it's doing.

A study conducted at the University of California in Davis found that the keto diet may be prolonging lives and enhancing cognitive functioning. The project examined the effects of different diets on mice and found that the keto diet extended longevity, improved memory, and boosted motor functioning. The 13% increase in longevity exhibited by the mice would equate to seven to 10 years in human beings.

More Brain Foods for Your Diet

Coconut Oil
There are a few ways that coconut oil can boost your mental power. For one, it contains properties that help maximize the brain's ability to use energy via neuron stimulation. It also reduces free radicals in the brain, while saturated fats help strengthen brain cell membranes.

Salmon
Salmon that has been caught in the wild has a high content of the omega-3 oil DHA, which affects brain cell production. It strengthens existing brain cells, while also promoting the growth of new brain cells.

Blueberries
When you eat blueberries, they deliver a heavy supply of antioxidants to the brain, reducing inflammation. The presence of inflammation in the brain is the root cause of many types of cognitive degeneration.

Eggs
Eggs have a high concentration of choline, which is essential to the production of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a highly utilized neurotransmitter. Additionally, the cholesterol in eggs reinforces brain cell membranes and helps produce the antioxidants that protect the brain.

Walnuts
This is actually a brain superfood that contains a host of vitamins and nutrients. Those properties especially beneficial to cognitive function include omega-3 fats, vitamin E, manganese, fiber, and copper.

Kimchi
If you're unfamiliar with Korean fare, this is a popular fermented meal. It's been found to be an excellent source of probiotic bacteria, which is good for overall brain health.

Activities That Strengthen Cognitive Functioning

Change Your TV Viewing Habits
It has been found that watching the right types of programming can impact your mind's functioning. Particularly, educational shows - such as science or historical documentaries - stimulate brain functioning. This is because you're forced to use your mind as you watch, either to learn something new or to solve a mystery.

Begin a New Hobby
Similarly, taking on a new hobby can also stimulate the learning process and strengthen cognitive functioning. Of course, it depends on the hobby. You should select something that requires learning new skills, such as is the case with gardening, woodworking, or learning to play a musical instrument.

Play with Puzzles and Brain Teasers
Another way to keep your mental functioning strong is by doing puzzles. While crossword puzzles are one type, there are many other kinds of word or math puzzles that can help you strengthen your thinking skills. Try acrostics, cryptograms, and syllacrostics, for instance.

Become a Tourist
How long has it been since you took a really good look at your area? Have you been to the city zoo, parks, or museums? These institutions in particular offer cognitive stimulation by compelling you to read signs and brochures about exhibits and displays.

Keeping your mind strong is as important as your physical fitness and both can be reinforced through diet and exercise. If you start early and do what you can to keep your cognitive functioning strong throughout your life, you may experience a lower rate of decline as you age.
