Trick Your Kids into Eating Healthy With These Tips

Breakfast Essentials

By Mikkie Mills

Children are, by nature, picky eaters. If you have a child that loves fruits and vegetables and will try anything you put in front of them, then you have a rare gem. For the most part, parents find themselves trying to be creative to get their little ones to eat healthily. The allure of soda and junk food is so great, and few can resist the temptation of all those carbs. Why would children want to eat healthy food when sugar-laden foods taste so much better? If you are looking for new and inventive ways to get your children to eat better, then here are some tips to help:

  1. Hide Vegetables Where They Least Expect Them
Parents should always be honest, but when it comes to getting your child to eat a well-balanced diet, then all bets are off. Smoothies are a great treat, and they are good for you. Carrots can give essential vitamins and are great for eye health. You can easily slip some carrots, broccoli, kale, spinach or celery into a smoothie. Add fresh fruits like strawberries, grapes, kiwi, and apples to balance out the taste of the veggies. If you mix it just right, your kids will be begging for more. Just let them think it’s a sweet treat. They don’t need to know what is in there.
  2. Make Foods Fun
Tons of internet sites show how to take vegetables and make them into characters. Did you know that broccoli can become little trees? Try all beef wieners and make them into an octopus with dangling tentacles. Why not make a shish kabob with alternating fruits and some cheese? The visual presentation of your food will appeal to them long before the taste. So you need to make sure that you give them something that makes them smile, then they will be more apt to eat it.
  3. Name Your Concoction with Fun Titles
Children love when their parents act silly. One of the best things about being creative in the kitchen means that you can name your invention whatever you want. Why not call a green juice blend “monster juice.? Shows them that eating doesn’t have to be boring. Appeal to their childish nature, and make an astronaut meal with cheese shaped stars and grapes for moons. Have fun with your food.
  4. Allow Them To Experience Other Cultures
Exploring other cultures is often intimidating to a child, but it can be exhilarating. What if you served your children a plate of kelp noodles and they refused to eat them? Well, you would call the meal a failure. Trying new things is not always easy. However, if you took those same noodles and you gave them chopsticks with a cartoon character on them, you may have a hit.

You can tell them all about China and Japan and how they use these utensils over forks and spoons. The only way they can use the fun chopsticks is to try the new food. Watch them have fun trying to pick up things, and it slides right off their sticks. It will be entertaining as well as delicious, and they will learn about a new culture.

  5. Use Fun Plates
"Fun plates" are a contemporary design that allows a parent to customize their child’s meal and make it appealing. For instance, you can make the hair on a guy’s head out of corn or peas. Either way, you can tell them to “eat the hair” and make him bald. The limbs can be celery or carrots. The sky's the limit on what you can create.

Kids always have so much fun when they get to pick apart something like this. Fun plates are available just about anywhere, and they come in all varieties.

You can make mealtime memorable rather than a disaster. If you are pulling your hair out trying to get your little ones to eat healthier, don’t just throw condiments at them for a dip, but you must get creative with your foods. Show them that variety is the spice of life and increase their pallet at the same time.
