1. Eat more fiber.
The first health tip on the list for aging adults is to eat more fiber. Did you know?; Fiber not only helps to prevent colon cancer, but it also lowers your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Your diet won’t have to drastically change; by simply incorporating whole grains into your diet, such as wheat bread in place of white bread you may increase fiber intake. Vegetables such as broccoli, green peas and carrots contain a decent amount of fiber as well. Men will want to consume 30 grams of fiber, whilst women want to aim for 21 grams in order to improve colon function.
2. Get active.
Physical activity is a great way to avoid a number of health issues that one will face as they get older. Physical activity can prevent or improve problems ranging from diabetes to heart disease. By simply walking for up to 15 minutes twice a day or 10 minutes three times a day, seniors can expect vast improvements in health. Overall balance will be improved as well, which can help to avoid fatal injuries from falling. Cardiovascular health will definitely see vast improvements, with weight being kept in check.
3. Vision and Hearing checks
Both vision and hearing can be impaired due to aging. It is recommended for seniors to get regular checkups for their sight and hearing. For most, they will notice an increased difficulty in reading fine print as well as gradual hearing loss. Many seniors have today have presbyopia, which is the inability to see clearly at near distances, like when reading. This can be corrected by speaking with your eye doctor about getting bifocal eyeglasses. For loss of hearing, hearing aids should be looked into. 4. Health screenings
Something all adults aged 60+ should do is stay up to date with health screenings. This means regular checks for cancer, cholesterol and high blood pressure. For women, mammograms should be ordered every one to three years and for men prostate cancer should be screened for as early as possible. By taking early preventative measures, many long term problems can be avoided and lead to an improved life.
Shingles is common in those aged 60+ due to the weakened immune systems caused by aging. This ailment is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus and it usually appears in strips or small bands on their face or body. This virus starts up mainly from those who had chickenpox before in their lives. Symptoms of shingles include itching or tingling pain in small areas, rashes, blisters and potential headaches/dizziness. By incorporating these five health tips into your daily life, you will be able to age more gracefully and enjoy life.
