Major Benefits of Meditation
You Need to Know About!

In 2020, it is harder than ever to keep on top of mental health issues. Things like social media, smartphones, and of course, the recent Coronavirus crisis have wreaked havoc with our minds recently, so it’s important to take the time to take care of your mental health. There are many ways in which you can do this, but there is one that has proven to be particularly effective for the majority of people - meditation.

This practice has a whole range of benefits that you should be aware of, and the best part is that you only need to commit around 15-20 mins per day. You don’t even need to seek out professional resources to successfully meditate, for you can do it in the comfort of your home on your own time. So, just what are these benefits? Let’s find out.

Benefit #1 - Reduces Stress

You are probably aware that our lives are busier and more stressful than they have ever been in 2020. With millions of people living a rat-race style life, rushing between work, bringing up kids, socializing, and other stress inducing activities, it’s normal to feel a bit stressed out. Here’s where meditation can really help out, instead of trying to reduce stress by unhealthy activities such as betting money on sports online, video games, alcohol and drugs, for just 20 minutes per day can greatly help to reduce stress levels. This is because meditation is directly linked to a reduction in cortisol levels, which is the primary hormone that causes stress.

Naturally, a reduction in cortisol levels can also have a direct impact on reducing feelings of anxiety and even depression. To make things even better, this can help to reduce and even eliminate stress-related problems like IBS and even PTSD. So, with so many benefits related to stress, why not give it a try?

Benefit #2 - Boost your immune system

With a deadly virus on the loose in the form of COVID-19, it’s no surprise that people have started to really think about their immune systems. However, most people take the approach of changing their diets and exercise habits to improve their immune system, but few know that meditation is also an option. This is because our immune systems are intimately linked to how we are feeling, our emotions, and our thoughts. So, by meditating and increasing our mental well-being, we are actually improving our immune systems at the same time.

There have even been studies that show the connection between meditation and increased electrical impulses in our brains, which then directly improve our immune responses. Finally, meditation is even believed to reduce our risk of cancer, which is obviously a hugely positive thing!

Benefit #3 - Controls Anxiety

If you’ve ever experienced anxiety before, you will know exactly how crippling and detrimental it can be in life. Anxiety can prevent you from interacting socially, from working out and exercising, and in extreme cases, it can lead to depression. Amazingly, certain methods of meditation like Vipassana have shown that this can help to reduce grey matter in certain areas of our minds that are linked to anxiety and stress. Obviously this will be critical and contribute heavily to a healthy mind, and if you can do this on a daily basis, the benefits could be enormous.

Whether you’ve suffered personally with anxiety or had someone close that has, it’s amazing how the first response in the medical field seems to be to turn to pills and medication. But with safer and arguably more effective methods of dealing with the problem, like mediation, surely this is an avenue that is worth exploring?

Remember, anxiety isn’t something that only affects average people either. There are prestigious athletes who have reportedly struggled with anxiety linked to fame and constant competition, as seen with athletes like Lebron James and Novak Djokovic. Both of these guys claim that meditation has helped to transform their lives!

Some people are a bit reluctant to try meditation at times, for various reasons. But as the saying goes - don’t knock it until you try it. There are many free apps on the market today that you can use for meditation, and there’s a ton of helpful videos on streaming sites like YouTube. So, with so many resources open for you today, what do you really have to lose?
