How to Maintain Proper Bedding Habits

Bedding is something that is essential to sleep, but is rarely considered when discussing it. There are many ways people differ in this aspect, the blankets used, colors, materials, and notably, washing. While the general wisdom is to wash bed sheets once a week, reality does not reflect this suggestion.

In the U.S, for example, only 32% of Americans wash their sheets weekly. For American men, the majority, at 51%, wash them every 10 weeks or less. In the U.K, single men have the staggering statistic of washing every three to four months. People in different areas, and different positions in life, have different habits.

Looking beyond washing habits, the types of bedding also has a lot of variance. While most opt to use a comforter or blanket, 11% of people use a quilt. Flat sheets are still prominent, but one third of Americans have opted to put them aside for other options. And finally there are countless different materials, plys, and thread differences to be found in bedding.

The reality is everyone sleeps, but no one sleeps the same way. What’s most important is finding bedding that works for the individual. Having an odd habit or two isn’t the end of the world, or even a bad thing. Although one thing remains demonstrably true, everyone should wash their sheets weekly, it’s clean and healthy.
