You can typically see plaque when you floss or rub your finger along your teeth after a period of not brushing. When plaque hardens and progresses, it turns into tartar. Tartar is a dark, strong colony of bacteria that can spread down into the gums and lead to gum disease.

Additionally, your teeth can suffer and decay when bacteria runs rampant. In extreme cases, you might need to get emergency dental care if things start to hurt intensely.

Establish a Healthy Oral Routine

The pillars of a healthy mouth are brushing, flossing, diet, and routine.

Brushing is as important as everyone tells you it is. Brushing every night and every morning is an effective way to prevent plaque from developing into dangerous colonies. You should also try to brush after particularly sugary meals or sodas.

Flossing is also just as important as they say. Most people don't see the true value of flossing because you can't see in between your teeth. The spaces between your teeth are exactly where plaque flourish, though.

In this way, flossing is almost more important than brushing because it targets the plaque that poses the most risk. You can also avoid some of the malignant plaque if you avoid a lot of processed, sugary, sticky foods.

A diet of natural foods in combination with regular brushing and flossing should keep you in pretty good shape. It's also important to stick to your dental appointments in addition to a healthy routine.
