Mecke Test

The Mecke Test is a presumptive substance testing tool that can determine the presence of ecstasy-like substances, hallucinogens, and opioids. Using the Mecke reagent to test for these substances can help prevent the risk of drug abuse.

Using the Mecke reagent to identify a substance is simple and involves placing a small sample in a plastic tube or white ceramic plate. The reagent can then be dropped into the sample and left to react for 30-60 seconds.

Different substances will react with the Mecke reagent differently, so observing color changes is essential. For example, ecstasy will give a light blue color changing to turquoise and then dark blue. This is a good indicator that you have MDMA in your sample.

Other substances like heroin and LSD will give a yellow color changing to green and then green. Similarly, other drugs such as cathinone (methylone, MDPV), scopolamine (burundanga), and 2C-B will change to olive green.

The Mecke reagent is prepared by adding a gram of selenious acid to 100 ml of concentrated sulphuric acid. Once the reagent has been dripped into the substance, it will immediately change colors.

A gel tab is a small, dried square of gelatin (often made with a mixture of lysergic acid diethylamide and sodium lauryl sulfate) that contains an acid, typically LSD. They can be tested like blotter papers but may take longer and require additional steps to ensure an accurate result.

Unlike blotter paper, which can be quickly soaked in reagent, gel tabs must be prepared with special care and attention before being tested. This is because the gelatin can cause the reagent to react differently from what would be expected, leading to confusing results.

As with any reagent test, it's essential to ensure the reagent you use is in good condition and has no residual chlorine residues. Luckily, it's easy to remove any traces of chlorine using boiling water, which is known for its sterilizing capabilities.

Testing Vials
