Living an Energy Friendly Lifestyle

Energy Friendly Lifestyle

Everyone wants to be more energy efficient. However, the majority of people are not aware that being more energy efficient doesn't necessarily mean buying energy-efficient appliances. There are plenty of ways that you can become more energy efficient without spending a fortune on new products. A few changes to your lifestyle will make all the difference in the world when it comes to saving money and reducing your carbon footprint.

Here are a few tips on how to save money and reduce your carbon footprint:

Learn about Energy Efficient Lifestyle

The first thing that you need to do is determine what type of lifestyle best suits your lifestyle. If you drive a hybrid, you should figure out how you can maximize your energy efficiency. Learning about your energy efficiency rating will allow you to shop for energy-efficient appliances and make smart choices about purchasing them. For example, if you drive a hybrid with a rating of 9.9, you can get double the energy savings by replacing your current appliance with a high-efficiency model.

Install Energy Efficient Lighting and Light Bulbs

The next time that you visit your local department store or Lowe's, look around and see what types of lighting and light bulbs they have to offer. Most home improvement stores will sell energy efficient light bulbs and newer models have even lower light bills.

Invest in Solar Powered Outdoor Systems

If you live in a warmer climate, like Texas or any of the Southwestern states, you will find that your power needs can be significantly reduced by installing solar powered outdoor systems. These systems convert your outdoor lights into power that you can use to remove these lights from your household energy supply, thus reducing your utility bill. Solar powered outdoor systems are extremely easy to install and can save you a lot of money. In addition, they won't pollute the air like electricity powered lights and they won't burn fuel like gas and oil.

If you live in an area where you receive lots of natural sunlight, you can greatly reduce your electric bill by using good old sunlight to supplement your main household lighting.

Shop for Electricity Providers

In unregulated states like Texas, you have the right to chose who you buy your electricity from. Not all utility providers are created equally. There are big differences in the carbon footprint of one power company from another. Some utilities generate their power strictly by burning fossil fuels.Others generate power from diverse green sources, such as wind, solar, or hydro-electric.Shop for your utility providers with their carbon footprint in mind.

Use Dimmers

Invest in Light Dimmers. Believe it or not, many people have inadvertently been wasting energy because they didn't know that there were light dimmers on their appliances. By adding dimmer switches to your lights, you can greatly reduce your electric bill. One of the easiest ways to dim your lights is to set the light dimmer feature to 60 percent. You can also turn down your central air conditioning during the evenings. Just by changing a few lights, you can save money.

EnergyStar Appliances

OK, I started out saying you didn't need to invest in new appliances. However, if you are purchasing appliances for whatever reason, it only makes sense to get the most energy efficient appliances that you can afford. One of the best things you can do for your family energy budget is to use energy efficient appliances.

It's easy to be aware of things like energy saving and home maintenance. The more you put into it, the more you'll get out of your energy saving and green lifestyle. There's really no need to feel trapped in an energy taking lifestyle.

Think Differently About What You Use in Your Home

Look at your appliances and other items and think about what you can do differently. Energy star is great for products but think about things like dishwashers, freezers, clothes dryers, and more. You can often find energy-saving alternatives that look almost identical.

Renewable Energy is the Wave of the Future

Wind and solar power are steadily gaining popularity. As energy prices continue to rise, these alternative energies are becoming more popular. While there are many skeptics, studies show that over the long run, these alternative energy sources will save you a lot of money on your utility bills and they actually help to improve the environment.

Bottom Line

Changing your lifestyle is difficult. But if you're committed to protecting our planet and saving money in the long run, switching to a green home and green habits will pay huge dividends.
