a Great Senior Living Option
By Holly Klamer
There comes a time in an older adult’s life when they may want to consider living in a retirement home. This could be because they simply want a peaceful life where they do not have to worry about house or apartment maintenance, or because they need certain assistance with their day-to-day life that they cannot get at their own home. Whatever the reason may be, in this article we will explore what retirement homes are and 5 reasons why they make an excellent senior living option.
Retirement homes are a general term used to describe senior living homes and communities for seniors. They may be in the form of assisted living homes, senior living communities or nursing homes. Retirement homes and communities are the two terms often used interchangeably, though they are key differences between the two. Retirement homes are usually stand-alone, while retirement communities may be situated on many acres of land, with many homes part of the community. So why are retirement homes great for senior living?
Reason #1: Retirement homes provide a maintenance-free lifestyle
When seniors get to a certain age, they may have a hard time looking after their own house. In the winter, they need to take care of the snow, and in the Fall, they need to clean the leaves around their property. There are also numerous repairs and other maintenance tasks such as checking the boiler and air conditioning systems each system that they may need to do throughout the year. Many older adults simply do not want to deal with the hassles of house maintenance, and as such, they can choose to spend their retirement in retirement homes. There, all maintenance is done for them. Retirement homes even include housekeeping so that the older adults do not have to clean their apartments.
Reason #2: Retirement homes provide assisted living services
Many older adults will choose to go to a retirement home in order to get assisted living care. Assisted senior living centers provide help with daily tasks such as bathing, eating, going to the bathroom, transferring (moving in and out of bed or within the home) and other daily tasks. All of these assistive services are handled by skilled caregivers who are on staff 24/7, and as such, older adults can get all the care they need, whether it’s during the day or night.
Reason #3: Retirement homes provide nursing care
Many retirement homes provide skilled nursing care for those older adults who require constant supervision and medical attention. Getting skilled nursing care at home may not be possible, as such, it makes sense for those older adults who have serious health issues to pick retirement homes that provide skilled nursing care as their senior living option.
Reason #4: Retirement homes provide numerous entertainment options
Retirement homes today are highly advanced when it comes to entertainment options. Many retirement homes dedicated activity directors who are responsible for daily entertainment. Older adults in retirement homes may be able to take advantage of daily activities that include group fitness classes, movie nights, game nights, karaoke nights, dance nights, arts and crafts, visiting guest speakers, off-site picnics, trips to the movies, museums and art galleries and much more.
Reason #5: Retirement homes are all-inclusive and provide 3 daily meals per day
One of the great pleasures in life is eating delicious food. Seniors who live on their own have to go grocery shopping and cook, and not all older adults want that lifestyle. Instead, they can take advantage of various dietary options included in retirement homes. Many retirement homes will have a chef on staff, who is responsible for cooking 3 tasty meals per day. Retirement homes will generally make accommodations for people with diabetes or food allergies and have special menu items in such cases.
Retiring at home is great, but it’s not often the best option. Look into various retirement homes and communities in your area and see if they make the best senior living option for you or your loved one.
