Once looped-around, tuck your head under their arm and control their movements.
  • Guillotine:- The guillotine is a very powerful move that you can use to take an opponent down. To do this, first get behind the opponent and put your left hand on their back. With your right hand, grab hold of their neck and pull down hard. If done correctly, the opponent will be forced to the ground.

Positions to Defeat Opponents by Using Jiu Jitsu

Beginners often think that jiu jitsu is all about takedowns and armbars. While these are essential skills to learn, there are many other positions that can be used to defeat opponents. Here are seven of the most effective jiu jitsu moves for beginners.

  1. Wheelbarrow Guard - This position sees the practitioner hovering above their opponent, with their legs wrapped around their waist. They then use their free arm to control the opponent's head and shoulders, making it difficult for them to move or defend themselves.
  2. Half-Kneeling Guard - In this variation of guard, the practitioner half-kneels on the ground, with their arm stretched out in front of them. They then use their free hand to control the opponent's head and neck, making it difficult for them to access their chest or arm muscles.
  3. Americana - In Americana position, the practitioner leans back against a wall or post, with one leg hanging down on either side of them. They then use their free arm to control the opponent's chest and head, making it difficult for them to move or breathe.
  4. Butterfly - In butterfly, the student is interlocked with another practitioner and the leg closest to them is their inside arm's opponent. The practitioner with the other leg on their inside arm's side then uses their free hand to control their arms and body, making it difficult for them to move or breathe.
  5. Long-Arm Arm Bar - In long-arm guard, one half of a pair of opponents must lie prone while the other half sits up, each in a half guard position, and both use different attacks: One attacker uses an elbow while they switch which free leg uses their arm.

  1. Guard Pass: When defending against a guard pass, your goal is to keep your opponent as far away from you as possible while still maintaining control of their arm. To do this, you'll need to position yourself in a guard (a defensive posture in which you lie on your back with both hands behind your head) and use your legs to push your opponent off of you. When they attempt to pass your guard, simply reach out with one arm and grab hold of their sleeve, pulling them close to you and allowing you to regain control.
  2. Straight Armed Guard: Another common guard move is the straight armed guard. In this position, the defender wraps their arms around their opponent's waist, trapping their arm and preventing them from passing their guard. To attack this position, the assailant will need to use their free arm to elbow or punch the defender in the face or body. If successful , they will then attempt to finish the fight with a simple sweep.
  3. Cross Armed Guard: The most offensive version of the guard is the cross armed guard, sometimes called a "triangle" or "flexible" guard. In this position, the defender wraps their arms around their opponent's head, trapping their arms and preventing them from passing their guard. In this variation of the competitive sport, some fighters will attempt to twist the trapped arm off of centre in such a way that whenever they eventually threaten to pass their guard, their opponent will step right back into control.
